This subject provides students with the opportunity to apply their existing knowledge and skills in order to publish real books, by real authors, for real readers. Depending on the books accepted for publication, where these books are in the publishing process, and the skills and interests of individual students, the subject will vary from semester to semester, as well as from student to student. Nonetheless, every student will be involved in at least two of the following publishing processes: acquisitions, editorial, design, print production, digital production, marketing, and sales. Students will also learn about project management, collaborative problem-solving, financial planning, brand development, social media marketing, and more, as these are all required to operate a real publishing house. The skills developed and practised in this unit are transferrable to a wide variety of industries and workplaces. The Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) approach used in this subject represents a blend of curricular and workplace learning – of theory and practice – which is used to achieve outcomes that meet the needs and expectations of both a diverse student body and the diverse industries that employ students majoring in Professional Writing and Publishing.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Immerse yourself in a real-world experience of publishing. You’ll apply your skills to editing and designing a real book. Cover publishing processes from acquisitions to sales. Explore marketing practices including brand development and social media.

Publishing Studio

This subject explores how key business disciplines are connected. Students will develop an understanding of market types, and how business and marketing strategies can create value and impact upon society and the environment. Students will also develop an understanding of the relationship between a business enterprise and various stakeholders, including government, customers and the broader community. Markets and Legal Frameworks

This subject was previously known as Interior Architecture Marketing (Practice) Strategies.
This subject explores and articulates the design student&#39;s transition from university life to post university life as a design practitioner. Students work with experienced and specialist practitioners to investigate and trial platforms and strategies appropriate to branding and marketing themselves as designers, their existing body of work, and their emerging practice trajectories. Students are introduced to various strategies, techniques and media platforms relevant to developing their professional profile. In the production of their folios, and the development of their own profiles, students are encouraged to understand their design practice in the broader local, national and international context of design practice. The contemporary concept and practice of trans-disciplinary where people work creatively across disciplines and in new modes of innovation, is also explored.
