Mathematics and statistics have important applications in finance, management, business and economics. Studying this subject will equip you with the skills in mathematics and statistics to solve real-life issues in the workplace. Topics you will investigate include business mathematics, differentiation, optimisation, integration, matrix algebra and mathematics relevant to finance and management. You will also explore descriptive statistics, discrete probability distributions, continuous probability distributions, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.

Quantitative Techniques for Management

To effectively manage a business or other organisation, you need to understand the general economic environment in which it operates. In this subject you will explore concepts and principles from Microeconomics and Macroeconomics that will help you to understand the key concepts of management economics. Microeconomics examines how consumers and firms make decisions and how they interact with each other in markets. This includes topics such as supply and demand, consumer and firm behaviour, price determination and the operation of markets, situations of market failure, and the impact and role of government on the economy. Macroeconomics studies the entire economy and its wellbeing. In this component of the subject, you will investigate factors such as inflation, exchange rates, interest rates and trade on the wellbeing and stability of the economy.

Economics for Management

Corporate finance covers important long-term financial decisions made in business organisations. In this subject you will examine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gain an advanced and integrated understanding of how to create sustainable value in corporate firms through long-term financial decisions. In the first part of this subject, you will focus on financial analytical techniques such as financial mathematics, valuation of bonds and shares and the relationship between risk and return. In the second part, you will explore the way these financial analytical techniques apply to long-term financial decisions. You will gain the skills and knowledge needed to determine what type of assets to invest in, how to raise the necessary funding, how to choose the mix of debt and equity, and how to reward shareholders.
