This course introduces the discipline of literary studies through case studies of a wide and diverse selection of shorter fiction. It will combine detailed attention to the formal design of the fiction with a consideration of geographical and social location, and historical context. The literature will be drawn from Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, United States of America, and Australia. The course examines literary form and language and develops methods of close reading and is designed to increase your confidence when responding to literature. It also looks at the study of literature as a discipline with its own history, topics, methods, and debates. It considers how the study of literature can be an important practical, vocational, cultural, and social component of a university education.

Meet one of literature’s most famous characters in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Resurrect the story of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Journey into Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Explore what makes these novels and more considered ‘literary’.

Narrative Fiction functions as a ‘gateway’ to the Literary Studies major but may also be taken as an elective. This subject aims to provide both a comprehensive introduction to narrative fiction and a sound basis for later work in the discipline of literary studies. Narrative Fiction introduces you to the study of narrative fiction (in the form of novels and short stories) through familiarisation with some of the key tools and concepts of narrative analysis. This subject provides you with the means to investigate how narrative texts are constructed, and why they are constructed as they are. The first module provides you with a tool kit that will allow you to analyse the rhetoric of fiction. The second module introduces you to realism, the most important single influence on the novel. The third and fourth modules present an overview of key developments in prose fiction since the early twentieth century, such as modernism and postmodernism. Narrative Fiction

In The Storytellers: Reading Fiction, you will read, discuss and write about some major Anglo-American novels written over the past 200 years. The subject provides a comprehensive introduction to concepts, tools and techniques required for the analysis of works of fiction. Further, the subject will explore the historical development of various genres and chart the movement from realism to Modernism. Reading Fiction aims to develop the disciplinary grounding necessary for advanced literary studies, but also to introduce you to practices of individual reading and writing that lay the foundations for lifelong learning. The Storytellers: Reading Fiction

Gothic Afterlives traces the history of the Gothic genre from its origins in the ghoul-infested castles and spectralised landscapes of 18th century art and literature through to the secretive suburban bloodsuckers of contemporary television drama. From its beginnings the Gothic has been a popular and controversial phenomenon that has drawn its energies from the darker regions of the imagination and the borderlands of taste. In the Gothic nothing is as it seems. The world of cheerful and comforting appearances, secure homes, grand cities, and the reassuring solidity, identity and sexuality of the body are all made vulnerable by the uncanny effects of the Gothic imagination. In this subject we&#39;ll follow the development of the Gothic in selected texts, films and TV series. Prerequisite: Assumed knowledge of essay writing and critical interpretation.

Gothic Afterlives

Explore American literature and its connections with the formation of cultural and political identities, institutions and histories through three case studies: expatriatism, regionalism and the representation of the city. This subject surveys some key writers and movements in American literature since the late nineteenth century, and draws links to important trends in American culture and history. It also develops your awareness of comparative perspectives, drawing out similarities and contrasts in the concern and themes of this literature with European modernism and Australian literary nationalism.

American Literature

This subject was previously known as Australian Literature and History 1930 to 1990.Explore Australian writing between 1930 and the late 1990s in the context of the three great national crises of those years: The Great Depression; The Second World War; and The Ecological Crisis. In this subject you read a selection of novels, poetry and short stories by writers including Eleanor Dark, Patrick White, Kenneth Slessor, John Manifold and Katharine Susannah Prichard, Thea Astley and David Malouf. This subject examines the inter-relations between literary writing and reading, cultural institutions and political movements and ideologies in Australian history from the 1930s to 1990.

Contemporary Australian Literature

In this subject you read a selection of poetry and short stories and a short novel as a basis for reflecting upon themes of nationality and gender in Australian literature and history. Texts include an anthology of poems and stories from the 1890s, Franklin&#39;s My Brilliant Career, and a subject dossier of relevant literary, historical and critical writings.The subject examines inter-relations between literary writing and reading, cultural institutions and political movements and ideologies during the two decades that principally shaped the national identity.
