The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. This subject will outline specific disciplines which have benefited from the integration of Indigenous Knowledges, and students will have the opportunity to hear from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and knowledge holders, engage in practical exercises, and participate in field trips. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Two Way Science

In this subject, we explore several current debates on matters of importance to Indigenous communities and mainstream Australia. These topics are all contentious and they are often divisive. We take a deep dive into the discourses both for and against and critically reflect on how they shape political action in these spaces. A broad range of voices are examined, including leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinkers from across the political spectrum and community sector, many of whom hold conflicting reasoning behind their positions. The role of the media, existing power structures and socio-political history have a significant role in shaping current discourses on topics related to Indigenous Australians and in this subject, students begin to unpack these ideas.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Hot Topics in Indigenous Australia

This subject introduces students to some important ideas around the Indigenous community development space. This unit explores the socio-political context in which contemporary Indigenous community development takes place and the importance of Indigenous methodologies in relation to knowledge production and CD practice. Some real-life examples of Indigenous CD will be examined using two successful community-controlled organisations as case studies. This unit will step between theory and practical experiences and examples to assist students in building their capacity to work with Indigenous communities and negotiating cross-cultural community development.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Work alongside Indigenous groups. Examine the profound impact legislation has had on Indigenous communities in the past. Then explore the culturally appropriate storytelling techniques being used to shape successful community initiatives today.

Working with people often demands sophisticated skills and artfulness and this unit takes seriously the task of coming into a place, listening, learning, and working collaboratively. ART101 is designed to prepare you to “make a difference in the world” in ways that are responsible, creative, and thoughtful. It is designed to support you to continue preparing for life outside of university: in the labour market, in civic life, in families, and as volunteers in initiatives that seek to create sustainable futures for generations that follow.ART101 will support you to prepare for a modern labour market, particularly in industry areas associated with justice, creative work, fairness, cross-cultural dialogue, ecological sustainability, and responsible government, as well as being active citizens, and supporting healthy family relationships and social groups. The learning experiences of this unit also provide further insight into important practices for university and professional life, including writing, thinking, reading, viewing, research, and collaborative work.The unit introduces you to knowledge, ideas and practices that foster clear thinking, relational maturity, ethical strength, and cross-cultural competence. The unit draws on a variety of knowledge traditions, beginning with Noongar katitj (Noongar knowledge systems), particularly in relation to the Murdoch University campus.
