This subject was previously known as Ideas of Theatre II.The theatre is a reflection of the views and perspectives of the world around us.  This introductory subject will provide an overview of the artistic, philosophical, and political ideas underpinning theatre practice in the western world from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a focus on playwrights and directors.  You will learn how theatre-makers during this period undertook bold theatrical experiments in response to significant social, cultural and political upheavals. Through studying key plays and practitioners from this period, you will develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the relationship between play text, director and performance, and have the opportunity to create your own piece of innovative theatre.

Making Theatre New

This subject was previously known as Ideas of Theatre I.The theatre is a place where society’s values are reflected; and from an understanding of the past, we can track the future. This subject investigates theatre and performance from its origins in ritual and the ancient Greek theatre to the emergence of realism. In this subject you will explore seminal play texts and their socio-cultural/political/historical perspectives, with a focus on the role of the actor. The ability to identify inherited theatre tradition, the key junctures in the progress of content and form, and the advancement of theatre as an art-form, is foundational to the contemporary practitioner. This subject is both practical and analytical; you will explore the body and the voice in performance, demonstrating an understanding of the contribution of the actor to the theatre event. You will also learn to read and write about theatre as a performance. You can take this subject as part of your theatre studies or as a stand-alone subject.

Performance From Ritual to Realism

French cinema is one of the most historically and culturally significant national cinemas in the world. Beginning with the early silent period of the late 19th century, which marks the origins of cinema as it is known today, in this subject you will survey influential movements in French cinema. This will include the experimental films of the Surrealists and the Nouvelle Vague, the stylistic concerns of Cinema du Look, nostalgia in Heritage cinema, attempts to create a &#39;national memory&#39; in Post-colonial films and recent French contributions to Transnational cinema. Throughout the subject, you will develop a foundational understanding of French film theory and criticism, together with background information on the socio-political context of film production in France. All prescribed films will be in French (with English subtitles), exposing you to the nature, structures, sounds, and forms of an ever-evolving French language, as well as the development and changes in cinematic styles, language, and visual culture in their social and cultural contexts. The subject will be taught in English and all students with an interest in film are encouraged to enrol, not just those who are majoring in French.

The media is a rapidly evolving global industry. To future proof your career in the changing media climate, you need a range of skills and an ability to adapt. In this subject you will focus on screen media, it being the most diverse and prevalent media we are exposed to in everyday life. You will explore the creative language of film and television and learn a range of terms for studying genres and the art of storytelling in audio-visual media. You will analyse feature films and television, and the changing content and ways of watching television. This subject will give you the foundation of methods and skills necessary for researching and studying screen media in varied forms and contexts.
