This subject is designed for those who wish to write creatively and focuses on the craft of fiction, and especially the short story. Students will draft and edit two short stories during the semester and provide feedback to other students on their draft stories. We read and discuss selected Australian short fiction in different styles, voices, and genres, and do hands-on writing exercises in class. It provides a theoretical framework and practical skills for writers and readers.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Writing Fiction

In this subject, you will acquire the skills and knowledge to begin the development and writing of a full length theatre performance text, series pilot or feature film script, by presenting a pitch, a treatment or concept, a folio of selected scenes, and workshopped readings.This subject explores script writing as a range of practices that are culturally and historically shaped. It combines critical readings of theoretical texts, plays and screenplays with the opportunity to workshop your writing in a supportive, collaborative environment.We will also survey local and national script development and script production opportunities for emerging writers.This is a level 3 subject.

Scriptwriting Project

Learning to write well brings benefits within and beyond university. This interdisciplinary unit offers you the opportunity to strengthen your professional, creative and academic writing skills. You will develop a conceptual framework for analysing the writing of others and editing your own work effectively, as well as improving your skills in the generation of ideas, elements of style and identification with the audience. These areas of writing will be explored through modules with theoretical and practical components: - Academic writing, including essay writing, essay structure, avoiding plagiarism, editing and proof-reading. - Non-fiction writing across a number of genres, particularly writing for popular media, reviews of the arts and writing for the web. - Creative writing, which can include fiction, poetry and script writing. This is a level 1 subject.

In this subject you will extend your understanding of creative writing by developing long-form fiction in a chosen genre. This will be an excerpt of a novel or novella. In your creative and critical practice you will consider how the longer form affects the use of technical elements such as plot and structure, POV, character and setting. You will engage in an intensive revision process, assisted by peer-feedback. The subject will offer further opportunities to develop your professional practice through synopsis writing, reading to peers, integrating workshop comments and editing after a workshop.This is a level 3 subject.
