Lifespan Growth and Motor Development

Study the influences on typical human growth and development with a focus on emerging motor and social behaviours.Learn the different aspects of human development across the three domains of development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial. Explore models of lifelong human development, motor development models, physical growth and physiological changes across the five primary periods of the lifespan. Examine the influences on pre and post-natal growth and motor development, as well as visual perceptual, social and cognitive development and its influence across the lifespan. We all grow, but how? Study human growth through three domains of development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial. Learn the five primary periods in the lifespan. Think about how visual perception, social and cognitive development come to be.  

This subject provides coverage of human development over the lifespan (infancy to old age) including cognitive and social-emotional domains of development. The major periods of development are examined, including infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood, emphasising predominant developmental aspects for different periods of development.In the practical component, students engage in empirical investigation intended to deepen and extend their understanding of development and the changes in functioning and behaviour it entails. Investigations address discrete aspects of human development and a range of developmental periods, and include student participation and training in data coding and collection. Students also complete practical exercises that will enhance their knowledge of developmental issues.

Lifespan Developmental Psychology

In this subject students will explore issues related to counselling with children and adolescents. Consideration is given to developmental issues, attachment, disorders of childhood and adolescence, chronic illness and disability. Strategies for intervention will also be addressed including engaging children in therapy and the therapeutic needs of children and adolescents facing specific problems. Child protection issues will also be explored. This subject is designed to equip students with basic knowledge with regard to child and adolescent functioning and practical skills for the delivery of child and adolescent counselling models.
