The Diploma of Applied Science is a practical and industry-focused program tailored for individuals interested in pursuing careers in specialised fields that require applied science knowledge and skills. This program is designed to be accessible even to those who have never considered a career in science before. One of the program&#39;s unique optional focus areas is &quot;Fermentation&quot;, which is ideal for individuals looking to enter innovative food and beverage industries like cheesemaking, brewing, winemaking, and fermented food and beverage production. Core subjects cover essential topics such as science fundamentals, applied biology, data analysis, and sustainability. Additionally, students have the flexibility to choose four elective subjects that align with their specific interests. This program was created in response to the growing demand within the fermentation industries, making it highly relevant to current job market needs. A standout feature of this program is its strong emphasis on learning, allowing students to enhance their problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by actively applying what they learn. Industry experts have played a pivotal role in the course&#39;s development and continue to contribute to its delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies, and work placements. The program offers both full-time and part-time study options. It combines online study with online practical workshops and tutorials, providing students with a flexible and well-rounded learning experience. This subject can provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry subjects that are part of a chemistry major at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for Year 12 Chemistry as it only covers topics of direct relevance as a background to the first-year subjects. This subject covers introductory chemistry for students with no previous knowledge of chemistry who intend to study the biological sciences. It does not form part of a Biology major but is taken as an elective subject.This subject explores the basic chemical concepts with a particular focus on biological systems and processes such as bonding and structure of organic molecules, aerobic respiration, ions in physiological systems, nutrient cycles and photosynthesis. Topics include fundamental chemical bonding theory, molecular geometry and interactions, reaction types and equilibria, introductory organic chemistry, and introductory thermodynamics. The laboratory program introduces basic techniques and skills commonly used in chemistry relevant to the biological sciences, along with reinforcing chemical concepts with practical experience. To complete this component of the subject, students must attend to complete a set of laboratory exercises. For students selecting an on-campus mode of study, you must attend fortnightly lab sessions throughout semester and students that have enrolled as online students must attend a laboratory workshop delivered in the last week of semester. Both options are on campus at either the Hobart or Launceston campus.

Chemical and physical separation principles underpin many industries of the modern world. In this subject you will extend your knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of substances and their interactions. Through laboratory-based and other activities you will investigate separation principles and how they apply to processes such as distillation, extraction, adsorption and filtration in a variety of industries. You will consider complex problems as well as the challenges and opportunities relevant to the application of these processes in industry.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:<ul><li>discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences</li><li>concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others</li><li>the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice</li><li>the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.</li></ul>You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.

Separation Principles and Processes

This subject is designed to provide an accessible and practical introduction to Chemistry. In this subject, you will acquire and apply knowledge of chemistry principles and techniques as relevant to applied or industry contexts, with a particular emphasis on biochemical processes. You will be introduced to a range of topics such as chemical analysis, phases of matter, acid-base chemistry, biologically important molecules, and biochemical reactions. During workshops you will use selected techniques to monitor, measure, and analyse, key parameters that are applicable to a broad range of applied and industry contexts. You will apply your learning to industry-based problems, explore potential solutions, and learn to communicate them effectively.

In this subject you will be introduced to the key steps involved in realizing the manufacture of fermented products for commercial purposes. These include process design and optimization, scale-up and manufacturing operations such as cleaning and sterilization, substrate preparation, inoculum development, fermentation monitoring and control, product recovery/formulation, and the treatment of effluent and disposal of waste. You will complement and extend your understanding of the operations discussed by investigating the process, and science, associated with the commercial production of selected fermentation products, by preparing fermented foods/beverages at home, and by participating in an applied research project or a work-integrated learning experience.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:<ul><li>a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice</li><li>principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios</li><li>reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations</li><li>ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry. </li></ul>Participation in certain types of work integrate learning experiences are contingent on the outcomes of a series of preparatory activities. Some work integrated learning experiences may require travel and/or accommodation at the student&#39;s expense.
