Architecture Theory: Built Environments

This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Design and renovate healthy and sustainable homes. You’ll unpack what sustainability means for dwellings. Look into designing for health and climate. Exercise your creativity. Get to know sustainable products and building materials.

Architecture Theory: Built Environments explores political, cultural, environmental and historical contexts and their relation to the production and inhabitation of the built environment. A series of thematic discussions introduces you to ideas and precedents in spatial design disciplines across a range of scales and a breadth of historical and cultural contexts. Presentations on strategies for analysing the built environment will give you tools to investigate precedents of your own choosing throughout the semester. At the end of the subject, you will be familiar with both visual and textual means of communicating about how the built environment relates to its varied contexts.  This subject focuses on establishing and enhancing students’ capacity to think with clarity and rigour to ensure solid bases for research inquiry and design practice. At Intermediate level, this subject provide foundational understandings of the history and lived spaces of architecture and built environments.

This subject will build on your practical knowledge of sustainable design for houses, expanding your thinking to houses within landscapes - both natural and constructed - and interacting with climate, biodiversity, human health and urban and regional food systems. You will explore systems-based design approaches including regenerative design, resilience thinking, permaculture principles and biophilic design that will enable you to better integrate your house within wider living systems and communities. Through innovative, holistic precedent analysis, self-directed field study and structured design exercises, you will devise practical strategies to create, for example, adaptive microclimates around your house, a home-based food system, and conditions for improved backyard biodiversity, while also targeting well-being and bushfire design awareness. With these systems-based perspectives, you will likely see numerous new opportunities for action at home that contribute to ecological restoration and the well-being of your household and community.
