This is a course for students who are new to their chosen major area of study. It is designed to help students develop advanced skills and understandings of contemporary practices in their field, while deepening their critical, analytical, and creative knowledges and experiences through interdisciplinary engagement with allied fields of media, creative arts and social inquiry. Graduate Diploma in Arts (Creative Writing)

The Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Writing is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in Creative Writing. The Undergraduate Certificate may give student entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the Creative Writing major within the Bachelor of Arts program offered by Curtin through Open Universities Australia or the equivalent internal course, among others at Curtin and Curtin OUA.

The program offers postgraduate training in writing as a preparation for creative and professional practice and/or advanced study. The program fosters skills needed for work as a creative writer, social commentator or narrative journalist and for careers in speech writing, public advocacy, information and media communication.You will gain certified expertise in the theory and practice of creative writing and be introduced to the international cross-currents of writing and information publishing industries. You will develop the techniques of creative and professional written expression, learn concepts and methods in creative research and gain the foundations for advanced study in writing and related fields.

Graduate Certificate in Creative and Professional Writing

The Master of Creative Writing is designed to extend and challenge emerging writers to hone their craft in a small community of writers. The focus is on developing your creativity and writing skills, and to provide expert training if you are aiming for professional publication. You are encouraged to experiment, hone your craft and to develop a technical vocabulary for critiquing your own work and the work of others. Specialist units in the degree engage with novel and short story writing, creative nonfiction (such as memoir, writing about place, personal essay), poetry, writing for young adults and manuscript development.

Master of Creative Writing

If you like to express yourself creatively through writing, the Creative Writing degree will help enhance your skills across a range of writing styles, such as fiction, poetry and writing for performance, as well as emerging and experimental genres. You’ll be encouraged to improve your critical awareness and develop all the relevant professional skills required  of an author in the digital age. Each week, you will benefit from the advice and support of our tutors, many of whom are acclaimed authors, and through critical engagement with a talented peer group. Your lecturers and tutors will also advise you on processes that will prepare you to seek publication for your work.   Curtin’s creative writing graduates have had consistent success in national literary awards and publishing. The content of the major creates employment outcomes across a broad range of communications-related fields and will allow you to develop applicable language skills and conceptual understandings that will be useful across a range of other academic disciplines.

Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing)

The Undergraduate Professional Writing and Publishing is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in Professional Writing and Publishing. The Undergraduate Certificate may enable entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the Professional Writing and Publishing major within the Bachelor of Arts among others at Curtin OUA.

The course also provides opportunities for students to take internships in their respective fields and to demonstrate qualification for possible entry into Curtin University’s PhD program.The Professional Writing and Publishing (PWP) Major will equip students with the skills, understanding and discipline to work in corporate communications and media in state, federal and local government, business and industry, the not-for-profit sector, arts organisations, and the magazine and book industries. These areas continue to demonstrate a significant growth nationally and internationally. It is expected that the degree will attract students with a strong command of the English language from a range of undergraduate disciplines from not only Humanities but also science and health sciences. Students will learn to convey information, issues and debate to colleagues, clients, constituents, and stake-holders by creating narratives that are rhetorically effective, ethically aware, well-researched, and cogently argued, in a range of media, genres and forms including print and online media, features and profiles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, narrative nonfiction, and promotion writing. Uniquely, the Curtin PWP program integrates creative practice and academic inquiry with training and experience in real-world technical and professional skills and competencies. It aims to foster its students’ narrative nonfiction writing talents, developing their skills in storytelling whilst training them in the specialised genres and conventions of professional communication and delivering advanced instruction in research, writing, editing and publishing. This equips students to contribute to and influence public discourse which is increasingly being driven by narrative: stories that capture an organisation’s identity, aspirations, and endeavours. Students will undertake a major project in their second year of study. They will also have an opportunity to practice their skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organization. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

Master of Arts (Creative Writing)

Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.This course offers students the opportunity to study one or two disciplines from a wide range of majors. Students choosing only one major will also choose the elective stream where they will be able to choose further units from the same discipline as their chosen major or may choose units from throughout the university. Unleash your inner wordsmith. Learn the narrative techniques different types of writing use and why, before putting pen to paper yourself. Develop short scenes for the stage, deconstruct poetry, and get knee-deep in creative writing workshops.

Students will investigate the art of visual storytelling and explore a range of techniques for the creation of story elements such as structure, character, dialogue, adaptation and layout. The subject also explores how cultural and critical theories offer frameworks for understanding film, television and multimedia.

Learn the skills behind the scripts of your favourite films and productions, including structure, character, dialogue and more. Learn to critique genres and theoretical approaches – before lifting your pen and unleashing your inner scriptwriter.

Scriptwriting

Students entering university can feel overwhelmed by how much reading they need to complete before synthesising and translating this information into their own written work. How can you read efficiently, for understanding and analysis? How do you transform what you have read into your own original writing that is clear and persuasive? In this unit you will learn how to read for information, understanding, and critique. You will be introduced to four techniques of reading: inspectional, analytical, syntopical, and close reading. You will then learn techniques of thesis-driven composition and improve your understanding of the ways in which sentences, paragraphs, and arguments are structured. Learn how to use others’ ideas to strengthen your claims without compromising your own voice as a writer.

Techniques in Academic Reading and Writing

In this subject, you will improve your skills in writing effectively for academic purposes. You will learn some essential principles of grammar and style, with a practical focus on essay writing. The subject progresses from fundamentals of sentence and paragraph structure through to researching and constructing an academic essay. It provides guidance on the ethics of writing by teaching the conventions of referencing. The subject is suitable to undertake in a wide range of courses. The communication skills that it develops will assist your academic studies and are transferable to diverse professional contexts.

The Craft of Academic Writing

This subject was previously known as Introduction to Writing.This subject explores representation in writing and how the dynamic relationship between Self and Other plays a central role in the writing process. The representation of the self and of others is central to a broad range of written genres and forms. Writing Creatively

An advanced subject which examines the techniques and problems involved in writing long fiction - specifically the long story, the novella and the novel. Students look at the work of a variety of fiction writers from the point of view of the writer who wants to learn how the authors of particular works succeeded. Students devise and carry out their own writing projects in long fiction.
