The Bachelor of Arts (Digital and Social Media) provides you with an opportunity to learn in detail about the human dimensions of the Internet: how people network, collaborate, and share information through Internet communications, media and design. You will develop advanced skills in creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur.
The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in website design, public communication, social network management, collaboration and web media production. At the same time you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet.
By combining this degree with recommended electives in media, design, business, information technology, marketing, and other disciplines, you will create the right degree program for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.

Bachelor of Arts (Digital and Social Media)

This degree was previously known as Graduate Diploma in Internet Communications.
The Graduate Diploma in Digital and Social Media provides you with an opportunity to learn in detail about the human dimensions of the Internet: how people network, collaborate, and share information through Internet communications, media and design. You will develop advanced skills in creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur. The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in websites, public communication, social network management, collaboration via virtual organisations, and web media production. At the same time you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet. By taking this degree, you will add to your existing qualification the knowledge and skills needed for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.

This degree offers a choice of studying two single majors together and introduces students to the complementary fields of digital and social media and professional writing &amp; publishing. Digital and Social Media  major provides you with an opportunity to learn in detail about the human dimensions of the internet: how people network, collaborate and share information through internet communications, media and design. You will develop advanced skills in creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur.
The Professional Writing and Publishing major prepares students for writing careers in the private, public and creative sectors through the study and practice of a range of different writing forms, including feature articles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, travel writing, history, humour, writing for the internet, promotional writing, creative non-fiction and media releases.

Social media platforms are an integral part of news and media. In Using Social Media, you will learn how to use different social media platforms to both create and share media content. The subject explores how to use social media to create original media content including news stories and promotional campaigns. You will learn how to identify and verify credible sources. You will also learn how to analyse social media strategy and develop a strategy for social media content dissemination, including how to determine an audience, and create engaging content specifically for social media, such as text, graphics and images. As well as key skills, this subject delivers key knowledge on misinformation and disinformation in social media, and legal and ethical implications, including defamation, privacy and copyright.This is a level 2 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Unlike many traditional business models which are product-centric or focused, the modern businesses of today are very much customer-oriented. A consequence of being customer-oriented is the need for businesses to engage positively, proactively and effectively on social media and be good at creating a strong narrative for the products or services that the business offers. In this subject, you will learn about the role that social media plays, taking a data analytics view of social media and its role to building brand equity. You will also investigate various storytelling techniques and tools, including effective creation of slide decks, and use of infographics and dashboards to engage consumers. Lastly, you will be introduced to the new developments poised to disrupt businesses, gaining an appreciation and understanding of how to manage these disruptors within the organisational structure as well as in the customer-facing aspects of the business.

Social media literacy has become essential to the work of most professions but particularly for professional communicators in both strategic communications and media.
