Graduate Certificate in Education

UniSQ’s Bachelor of Secondary Education is designed to prepare graduates who are confident to teach a diverse range of students from Years 7 to 12, in a variety of contexts. Your degree will prepare you to teach into a minimum of two subject areas, with over 20 different teaching areas from which to choose. Having two teaching areas makes you a flexible and desirable educator in the secondary school environment. A key feature of the Bachelor of Secondary Education is the opportunity to complete your professional experience at a variety of locations including rural, remote and international placements. The Bachelor of Education qualifies you to be a teacher in Australia, and many countries overseas. You will develop practical skills in reflection and observation by engaging in tutorials, lectures and on-line activities. The Role of Education Support

This subject was previously known as EDC151 Child Development for Educators.Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical human development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on maximizing developmental outcomes from birth through young adulthood. In addition to emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and maintaining safe school and care environments for children and adolescents. This subject provides an overview of technology enhanced resources commonly used to support teaching and learning. Fundamental skills, attitudes, and approaches that educators require to make effective personal and professional use of such resources in varied educational contexts will be addressed. A key focus will be effective integration of technology to enhance learning, teaching and management processes. Approaches for working in technology-rich educational contexts by which possible harm to one’s self and to others may be minimised through systematic assessment of risk, adoption of safe practices, and ethical behaviour will be explored.

Teaching and Learning in the Digital World

This subject introduces you to the study of teaching as a profession and provides opportunities for you to critically examine the nature of teachers’ work. Through reflecting on your past educational experiences and dispositions (that is, your attitudes and beliefs) about teaching and teachers, you will establish a sound base to develop your knowledge and understanding of contemporary teaching practice. Content explored in this subject includes the pragmatics of teachers’ work such as planning, establishing a positive and supportive learning environment, communicating as a teacher, and student learning, motivation and engagement. You will have the opportunity to further explore each of these topics and to develop your professional knowledge through observation of educational contexts. You will be introduced to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Level) and reflect on these in relation to your engagement in this subject and thus, your own development as a teacher or education support specialist.

Foundations of Teaching

This subject is the first in a sequence of four professional teaching practice focused subjects. The subject will support your understanding and application of key education theories, concepts and skills to develop your professional teaching practice. The first module will introduce evidence-based learning design for secondary teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners. The second module will introduce the theory and application of positive classroom management and the third module will address professional conduct behaviours and effective communication strategies for teachers. This subject is designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation of essential skills you will need to demonstrate on a school-based professional experience placement.
