Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security

Our Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security will equip you with a deep understanding of scientific theories and practices in the field, empowering you to develop and communicate effective solutions to cyber security challenges. The program emphasises professional integrity and ethical conduct, ensuring you can design and implement sustainable, inclusive cyber security strategies. Pathways  After completing the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security, you are able to apply to the on-campus Master of Cyber Security and carry over all credits achieved. You will be exempted from completing the four (4) courses (48 credit points) completed in the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security and will be required to complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) as specified in the program structure in order to qualify for the MC159P25 Master of Cyber Security degree. Credit outside of the above arrangements will be assessed consistently with the RMIT University credit policy . Introduction to Cybersecurity

In this subject, you will learn about the procedural nature of cyber security. You will analyse the effectiveness of threat and vulnerability mitigation through use of contemporary cyber security frameworks. You will be explore mitigation strategies, operational controls, and countermeasures needed to address various threats and vulnerabilities from both technical and organisational perspectives. Defensive Cyber Security Procedures

This subject introduces you to industry approaches taken in threat intelligence and assessment. The subject will be task-focused and will allow you to explore the threat intelligence process with a focus on three key areas: understanding industry threat landscapes; legal and ethical considerations for penetration testing; and understanding and assessing penetration testing processes within industry contexts.

Cyber Threat Intelligence

This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn: <ol><li>Cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange; </li><li> Intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worm; </li><li>The use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and Web security.</li></ol>

Networks Systems and Web Security

The subject begins with a broad examination of cybercrime and moves to a specific focus on cyber fraud. The subject explores contemporary criminological theoretical approaches to explaining cyber fraud, analyses offender methodologies and examines cyber fraud victimology. The subject addresses contemporary approaches to prevention and enforcement in Australia and across the world. The role of relevant government, law enforcement, regulatory agencies and the corporate and private sector in the prevention and detection of cyber fraud is addressed.

Understanding and Preventing Cyber Fraud

This subject introduces students to fundamentals of distributed networked environments, primarily focusing on wired networks but students will examine some of the different approaches in wireless networks. It provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation.This subject will provide students with an understanding of: OSI model framework; TCP/IP, common internet risks and requirements; operation of encryption techniques; digital signatures; public key infrastructure; authentication and non-repudiation. Additionally, students will be required to analyse and assess recent developments in ICT security technologies related to networking. Completing this subject will provide you with the background knowledge and practical experience to go on to obtain micro credentials in the Cisco CCNA 1 “Introduction to Networks” Course, which is the first of three modules in the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) industry certification.

This subject introduces students to laws and policies regulating Cyberspace. It invites students to critically evaluate the sufficiency and effectiveness of laws, policies and industry self-regulation in addressing challenges to government, business and society in an increasingly online world. The subject specifically examines Australian and International Law and practice in this area paying attention to perspectives from legal, political and technological experts.

This subject will cover basic aspects of information and data security including integrity models, message authentication, authentication tools, access controls and cryptography. Topics will focus on data assurance and prevention methods including data integrity methods. This subject also covers basic cyber-attack defences such as firewalls.

Data Security and Information Assurance

This subject delves into the scientific study of human behaviour in relation to cyber security, with a particular focus on psychological, sociological, anthropological, financial and economic considerations. Key theories covered include motivation, cognition, emotion, and personality traits that influence victim vulnerability and hacker success. Additionally, the subject examines cybercrime business models, criminological theories, and the impact of organisational culture, leadership, and communication on cyber security practices. Students will analyse the economic and financial implications of investing in human factors in cyber security and propose cost-effective risk management strategies. Through the development of a comprehensive cyber security culture, education, and engagement strategy, students will apply professional skills in evaluative judgment, team building, negotiation, and high-level communication skills.

Human Factors in Cybersecurity

Computer systems and networks, and the applications that they support, are essential to information flows, economic transactions and critical infrastructure in the twenty-first century. While early computer hackers were more interested in exploration, modern cybercrime is increasingly driven by activist or malicious sentiment (hacktivism), espionage and/or the desire for profit. This unit will present an overview of cyber security in practice with reference to both public and private sector organisations. The unit will look at the motives and perpetrators of cybercrime. It will explore how individuals and organisations face specific threats from their use of technology and identifies challenges in maintaining cyber and information security. It further examines the protective security measures required to protect physical and digital access to information through people, infrastructure and computer systems.
