This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn: <ol><li>Cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange; </li><li> Intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worm; </li><li>The use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and Web security.</li></ol>

The subject begins with a broad examination of cybercrime and moves to a specific focus on cyber fraud. The subject explores contemporary criminological theoretical approaches to explaining cyber fraud, analyses offender methodologies and examines cyber fraud victimology. The subject addresses contemporary approaches to prevention and enforcement in Australia and across the world. The role of relevant government, law enforcement, regulatory agencies and the corporate and private sector in the prevention and detection of cyber fraud is addressed.

Understanding and Preventing Cyber Fraud

This subject introduces students to fundamentals of distributed networked environments, primarily focusing on wired networks but students will examine some of the different approaches in wireless networks. It provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation.This subject will provide students with an understanding of: OSI model framework; TCP/IP, common internet risks and requirements; operation of encryption techniques; digital signatures; public key infrastructure; authentication and non-repudiation. Additionally, students will be required to analyse and assess recent developments in ICT security technologies related to networking. Completing this subject will provide you with the background knowledge and practical experience to go on to obtain micro credentials in the Cisco CCNA 1 “Introduction to Networks” Course, which is the first of three modules in the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) industry certification.

Data Networks and Security

Cyber Law and Policy

This subject will cover basic aspects of information and data security including integrity models, message authentication, authentication tools, access controls and cryptography. Topics will focus on data assurance and prevention methods including data integrity methods. This subject also covers basic cyber-attack defences such as firewalls.

Data Security and Information Assurance

This subject delves into the scientific study of human behaviour in relation to cyber security, with a particular focus on psychological, sociological, anthropological, financial and economic considerations. Key theories covered include motivation, cognition, emotion, and personality traits that influence victim vulnerability and hacker success. Additionally, the subject examines cybercrime business models, criminological theories, and the impact of organisational culture, leadership, and communication on cyber security practices. Students will analyse the economic and financial implications of investing in human factors in cyber security and propose cost-effective risk management strategies. Through the development of a comprehensive cyber security culture, education, and engagement strategy, students will apply professional skills in evaluative judgment, team building, negotiation, and high-level communication skills.

In this subject, you will learn about the procedural nature of cyber security and the tools defined by the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP). Upon completion of this subject you will be able to apply your cyber security knowledge with the relevant tools and techniques to support and make improvements to business operations.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences.
