The content will provide you with the leadership skills to drive healthcare improvement through evidence-based solutions. You’ll learn about improvement theory and apply a suite of tools and techniques that encourage a problem-solving mindset. Unsafe medication practices and medication errors are a leading cause of injury and avoidable harm in health care systems across the world. In 2020-21, 16.6 million Australians (65% of the population) received PBS prescriptions, and almost all of the population use medicines each year. In Tasmania ~15% of admissions to medical wards for patients 65 years and older are related to adverse drug reactions (ADRs); almost 90% of these are preventable through better medication management. This subject was previously known as PHIX137 Critical Thinking.Please note: This subject is available in Macquarie Session 3, which is an intensive semester that spans only 5 intensive teaching weeks, plus a mid-semester recess and an assessment period. Students are advised to enrol in only one or two subjects in Session 3. Students who would prefer to take the unit over 13 teaching weeks should enrol in the Session 1 or 2 offering.This subject aims to teach the fundamentals of critical thinking and reasoning. Students will learn how to construct, analyse and critically evaluate arguments; how to detect common fallacies in reasoning; and how to think logically and creatively. We teach these skills by developing practical techniques for the evaluation of reasoning, and applying them to arguments from business, law, science, politics, philosophy and the media. Critical thinking skills are invaluable across all disciplines, and will benefit students in academic contexts and in life beyond university.s

Identify methods used to structure arguments. Beware of fallacies and pseudo-arguments. Prepare for discourses on subjects including science, philosophy and law. Sharpen your approach to thinking critically and producing well-reasoned arguments.

Please note: Previous title - The Art of Good Thinking.In your personal and professional life, being able to think deeply and broadly, analyse problems and find rational solutions is fundamental to success. In this subject we examine the principles of critical thinking, and consider how to distinguish good reasoning from bad. You will learn the basic skills of argument analysis and evaluation, including how to determine the logical structure of a piece of reasoning, through the use of of techniques such as argument diagrams. You will learn how to detect and avoid common fallacies of reasoning, and you will learn how to construct clear, rigorous and logical arguments. Throughout the subject you will learn the fundamentals of good thinking through analysing and critically evaluating real-life arguments drawn from the media, politics, law, science, and everyday life. A bonus topic concerns creativity in reasoning.

This subject helps the student evaluate data-based evidence encountered in everyday life. It provides the fundamental numeracy skills required by business people, scientists, lawyers, nurses, journalists, social scientists, teachers and other professionals who need to evaluate data-based arguments, whether found in newspapers, television or on-line websites. This is achieved by a combination of studying newsworthy topics introduced in lectures, laboratory classes which encourage engagement with others and on-line quizzes that assess numeracy skills. The four themes covered in this subject are gathering useful data, turning data into information, probability and from data to decision making.

This subject teaches the fundamentals of critical thinking, with particular focus on applications in the health-care sector. You will learn how to construct, analyse, and critically evaluate arguments; how to reason logically and well; and how to communicate your thoughts clearly and effectively. You will learn practical techniques for the evaluation of reasoning, and apply these techniques with fellow students to explore topics and arguments from health-care, academia, and the popular media. The skills you acquire in this subject will be invaluable, not just across academic disciplines, but more broadly for leading a life enriched by critical thinking.

Critical Thinking: Reasoning Skills for Health Professionals

Psychological studies have repeatedly shown that our thinking can be biased, distorted, and misinformed. This subject introduces you to some of the most common mistakes that people make in reasoning and equips you with essential tools to recognise and sidestep these errors. Among other things, you&#39;ll master the use of argument diagrams and basic logical principles to dissect and assess arguments as they occur in everyday life.Throughout this subject, you will improve your ability to think with clarity and autonomy, and to participate constructively in discussions and debates. Though critical to the practise of philosophy, these competencies are also vital across all disciplines in academia and are highly sought after in numerous professional fields. Consequently, students often report that the skills they acquire in this course prove to be of extraordinary benefit, regardless of their future career paths.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject examines competing accounts of violence in the academic research, mass media, and everyday conversation. It asks why the news media focuses on extreme cases of violence, and how this produces social panics around particular problems while concealing other more serious issues. It shows how patterns of everyday talk about violence cause people to worry about specific risks to their safety and not others, and why anxieties about violence often lead to demands for certain kinds of law enforcement. The subject explores how accounts of violence in even non-scholarly cultural forms like films and television series, are actually based on complex underlying theories of psychology and society. Even in apparently neutral and objective academic research, it reveals a range of unrecognised assumptions that shape how we understand the world. The subject includes a focus on violence and gender, examining changing ways of understanding sexual and intimate-partner violence, and exploring issues of masculinity and violence.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
