The Bachelor of Security Studies (OUA) will develop your knowledge and analytical skills to identify and address traditional and non-traditional security threats from both national and international perspectives.The course presents a systematic approach to security studies that covers the key conceptual approaches to identifying and managing security challenges and the diverse threats facing Australia, its region and the world in the twenty-first century. The broad scope of the course reflects the Australian government&#39;s expanded definition of national security and targets industry needs for graduate skills and capabilities.

Bachelor of Security Studies

In studying this course you will have in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of intelligence studies; the evolution of Australia’s intelligence community; and the emerging domestic, regional and international challenges for intelligence. It will also equip you with a practical skill set to analyse intelligence challenges, based on real world examples. The core units, provided through the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, focus on synthesising the latest developments in Intelligence theory and practices. Elective choice allows you to also focus on other aspects of security, including counter terrorism, security and strategic studies, cyber security and criminology.

Master of Intelligence

In studying this course you will develop an understanding of the different dimensions of security issues and criminology. All units are provided through the Department of Security Studies and Criminology and focus on synthesising the latest developments in security studies and criminology. These units of study will provide you an in-depth understanding of theoretical and practical issues at a global, regional and national level.

This subject exposes students to the key strategic trends in the Indo-Pacific region. It looks at the rise of China and India as emerging regional great powers, and the response by other major players, including the United States and Japan. It introduces students with the most pressing traditional and non-traditional security challenges facing the region today. It also provides students with the conceptual and empirical understanding of Australia&#39;s role, interests and instruments in regional security and stability. The subject also introduces students to the diverse non-traditional challenges influencing Indo-Pacific region. The subject concludes with an assessment of the sources and consequences of key regional actors that influence security and prosperity in the twenty-first century.

Examine the core nations and issues concerning security in the Indo-Pacific Region. Frame Australia’s position as a middle power, predict potential flashpoints, and explain the role of states and intergovernmental agencies in maintaining security.

Strategy and Security in the Indo-Pacific

This subject provides a critical introduction to the causes, strategies, and tactics of terrorists and violent extremists in the twenty-first century, and some possible solutions to these problems. It explores the global origins and history of terrorism as a means of political coercion, evaluates the effectiveness of terrorism as a strategy, and examines how terrorism and violent extremism are changing in the twenty-first century. Attention will be given to case studies looking at various religious, political, and far-right and far-left ideological terrorist and violent extremist organisations. By the end of this unit, students will gain an understanding of the dynamics that underpin twenty-first century terrorism and violent extremism, as well as evaluate both hard and soft approaches to countering these. Special attention will be focused on the sources of successful and ethical countering strategies; understanding mechanisms of radicalisation to and from violent extremism; evaluating proportionate state response to terror and violent extremist threats; and assessing the role of new technologies such as social media on how terrorist groups operate.

Explore the range of law enforcement and societal response options available to governments. Understand terrorism as a strategy and as a tactic, recruitment and group dynamics, narratives and the role of global media, and cyber terrorism.

Terrorism and Counterterrorism in the 21st Century

Computer systems and networks, and the applications that they support, are essential to information flows, economic transactions and critical infrastructure in the twenty-first century. While early computer hackers were more interested in exploration, modern cybercrime is increasingly driven by activist or malicious sentiment (hacktivism), espionage and/or the desire for profit. This unit will present an overview of cyber security in practice with reference to both public and private sector organisations. The unit will look at the motives and perpetrators of cybercrime. It will explore how individuals and organisations face specific threats from their use of technology and identifies challenges in maintaining cyber and information security. It further examines the protective security measures required to protect physical and digital access to information through people, infrastructure and computer systems.

Cyber Crime

This subject provides an introduction to key events, processes, and concepts in the international history of war, peace, and security in the twentieth century. Students will investigate the causes, conduct, and consequences of particular international conflicts, such as the world wars and the Cold War. They will also examine the evolution of ideas and institutions that provided - and in many cases still provide - the political architecture for international and national security. In covering this material, the subject will encourage students to develop their analytical thinking and writing skills.

International Security in the 20th Century

This subject focuses on non-traditional security threats and challenges. It introduces students to the concepts of securitization and human security. It then assesses a range of non-traditional security threats, addressing the risks and dangers associated with them, as well as discussing ways to manage them. Students will examine areas such as global terrorism, insurgencies, transnational organised crime, the international arms trade, environmental security, population and refugees, poverty and development, global health, energy security and the challenges for Australia.

New Security Challenges

This subject was previously known as PICX110 Introduction to Security Studies.This subject is a gateway unit into further study in Security Studies. It will introduce students to the theoretical foundations, essential concepts and central issues in the field of Security Studies. It will also further develop and refine students’ academic skills and literacy. Students will learn how to use Security Studies&#39; central theories and concepts to gain a deeper understanding of the leading security challenges currently confronting Australia and the wider world. At its conclusion, students will have acquired the academic skills and conceptual knowledge necessary to successfully pursue their undergraduate studies in Security Studies.

Analyse security, instability and armed conflict in the modern system. Gain an overview of interstate/intrastate war, military power, alliances, nuclear weapons, humanitarian intervention, terrorism and counterinsurgency.

Introduction to Security Studies

Aristotle described the human as a &#39;zoon politikon&#39; (political animal). That is, humans are creatures that live in a polis and engage in politics. Humans also have a history of violence, through all ages and across all cultures. This unit explores intersections of these two expressions of human activity, politics and violence. It incorporates theoretical and philosophical perspectives and empirical analyses, including on war, terrorism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism, genocide and ethnic cleansing, insurgencies and revolutions, protest and assassinations.

The subject introduces students to scenario planning and simulation (serious game) techniques as critical thinking tools in the context of security policy analysis and planning. In the first modules, students are introduced to the broad logic and use of scenarios and simulations, as well as to their strengths and weaknesses. The second part of the unit is structured around one main contemporary security and criminology-related question that is examined in detail using scenario planning techniques and the conduct of a serious game. Students enrolled in this unit will take the role of the counter terrorism expert.

Decision Making, Scenario Planning and Simulation in Counter Terrorism

This unit introduces students to scenario planning and simulation (serious game) techniques as critical thinking tools in the context of security policy analysis and planning. In the first modules, students are introduced to the broad logic and use of scenarios and simulations, as well as to their strengths and weaknesses.
