Environmental problems are also social problems. Explore people-environment interactions through the Geography and Environments major to develop specialist expertise across the physical, spatial and social sciences and the integrated knowledge needed to solve environmental challenges locally and globally. Geography is uniquely placed within the BSc to offer insights into the complex social-ecological systems that need to be navigated to achieve these solutions, including understanding regulatory frameworks, ethics in science, and the critical evaluation and synthesis of information. BSc students with a major in Geography and Environment have career prospects in land management, policy and planning, sustainability planning, environmental regulation and assessment, in both the public and private sector. You will develop skills for 21st century jobs that require flexibility, innovative thinking and lifelong learning. This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

Professional Research Methods

Antarctica and the Southern Ocean – valued, protected, understood. This mantra was coined originally by the Australian Antarctic Division (the government department with responsibility for Australian activities in the Antarctic) and was also adopted, with modification, by Antarctica New Zealand (New Zealand’s government department). It reflects the vision of these two countries, and the ideological approach they have to their interests in the Antarctic. It is simple, descriptive and informative. It is what this subject is all about. “Protecting Antarctica” integrates the natural and social sciences to give context to contemporary Antarctic environmental issues. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of the management and regulation of uses of the continent and surrounding marine environment of the Southern Ocean from the point of view of protecting the natural environment and its values. It includes a series of lectures on geography and environmental sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences and humanities. “Protecting Antarctica” incorporates the theme of multiple use management of a globally important region, wherein management involves commercial marine living resource extraction, scientific research, logistics, and tourism and other non-extractive commercial activities. Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are subject to a unique legal regime including an environmental protocol to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, and this instrument has become the basis upon which all human activity in Antarctica is judged. Completing the subject will equip students from a wide variety of fields with the ability to view the Antarctic from a more holistic perspective. Your new knowledge will assist you to understand the various values of the region, how they – and the areas they apply to – become known, then valued, then protected.

Governing Antarctica

This subject will equip students with an interdisciplinary understanding of energy systems. Its focus is on how science and policy are interacting to shape Australia’s energy futures. The Australian energy sector is experiencing a period of change, prompted by the availability of new energy technologies as well as new societal expectations, desires and behaviours. Learning will focus on how these changes are being initiated and governed through a range of organisations and institutions, including the state, corporations, community groups, and individual households. The interplay between expert knowledge and decision making will be analysed, with close attention to the politics of technical decision-making processes. This subject is taught collaboratively with input from the Tasmanian energy industry and government. Science and Policy for Energy Futures will be of interest to undergraduate students from Geography, Social Sciences, Engineering and Law.

Science and Policy for Energy Futures

The most complex and important challenges facing societies today bring together concerns about environmental, political, economic, and cultural sustainability. Guided by an interdisciplinary teaching team with expertise in life sciences, social sciences, and business, you will explore ways that you and others can act as agents of change for sustainability. You will work individually and in collaborative teams to analyse root problems, develop feasible action plans, and communicate about sustainability transitions to target audiences. Acknowledging the essential importance of just and democratic action to achieving sustainability, you will take account of Indigenous perspectives, diverse values, social power, and your own positioning. Global sustainability challenges will be grounded in diverse contexts from Tasmania and around the world. Drawing inspiration from the stories of other change agents, you will be empowered to advocate and catalyse practical change through organisational, professional, civic, and personal action. This subject forms the capstone of the Sustainability Major that can be completed in the BSc or in any other undergraduate degree that provides elective space. It can also be taken as a stand-alone elective.

Change Agents for Sustainability

All aspects of human life are geographical. Our lives take place in space. Spatial practices and ideas are central to individuals and societies: they help determine who and what belongs where, who controls and owns which resources, and who has what advantages or disadvantages. In this subject you develop skills of geographical inquiry that investigate and intervene in these human geographies. You explore the practical benefit of this inquiry through studying crucial challenges relating to economic value, political power and cultural identity. You analyse case studies from around the world on topics including precarious employment, sustainable and just development, decolonization, nationalism and migration. You apply field research techniques to investigate human lives in the context of ideas of place, territory, mobility, landscape and environment at diverse scales. The critical skills of reasoning, researching and communicating developed in this subject are valued by employers in social and environmental policy, planning, development, research and management.This subject prepares you for advanced level subjects including TAS-KGA308 and TAS-KGA319.

Geographies of Economy, Politics and Culture

The physical and living aspects of the global environment interact to produce the extraordinary variety of landscapes, ecosystems and species that occupy this planet. This subject highlights the interplay and conservation of controlling processes so that they continue to maintain Earth&#39;s ecosystems and inspire future generations. Earth, Climate and Life develops intermediate understanding of factors controlling geomorphological distinctiveness of earth surface features, weather and climate processes from global to local scales, and distributions and habitats of plants and animals and how they interact within ecosystems. These topics are integrated across various time and spatial scales, emphasising distinctive biomes including island places, and will help students understand reasons for variety in the attributes of landforms and plant and animal species. The subject prepares students for several third year subjects in physical geography, and develops key skills in demand among employers, including analysis of multiple factors that may be in operation, and presentation of convincing reports.

Earth, Climate and Life

This introductory subject develops your knowledge of how people depend on nature, and how increasingly the conservation of nature depends on people. We will explore these relationships through a values lens: how nature is important for its own sake, how natural resources are important to people, and how nature is important for people&#39;s wellbeing. Workshops will provide you with skills to map social and ecological landscapes, argue for the conservation and use of nature, and present your evaluations and arguments to others. Some workshops will be conducted in the field in and around Hobart and Launceston, with virtual field trips and workshops for distance students. This subject will be useful in a wide variety of occupations and professions in government, environmental NGOs, and industry - as well as your personal understanding of nature.

TAS-KGA171 Global Geographies of Change introduces you to the study of geography and environment by considering the critical intersections of climate, hazards, vulnerability, and sustainability alongside pressing issues related to population, development, and territory. In this subject, you will develop an understanding of earth and human systems, employing geographical imagination and cutting-edge mapping applications to navigate the intricate global geographies of change.You will learn via collaborative workshops, fieldwork and immersive experiences, including in-person or online field trips to coastal and vulnerable lands, and to explore landscape interpretation from indigenous scholars. You will examine environmental change through varied territorial and demographic lenses, fostering an enriched understanding of real-world challenges and ensuring that human experiences and perspectives remain at the heart of our exploration.Our aim in teaching KGA171 is to demonstrate how the study of geography and environment can contribute to the creation of a fairer and more sustainable world. We teach in the belief that rigour and passion are a powerful combination in knowing the world so as to change it for the better.
