In this subject you will learn about Music and the Visual Arts as key areas of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. You will become familiar with the research that supports the practice of the Arts in education and apply this to your planning, teaching and reflection. You will experiment with, reflect on and apply the elements of Music and Visual Arts to Early Childhood and Primary contexts and to key Australian curriculum documents. As a culminating performance of your learning you will plan, teach and reflect on a short Music or Visual Arts teaching session.

This unit examines the role of music, performance, and visual arts in social and political activism from 1850 to today. Students will explore how artists have used their work to challenge authority, inspire movements, and advocate for change. Through historical analysis and case studies, the unit covers key protest movements and the creative strategies that defined them, from civil rights and anti-war protests to environmental and class activism. By engaging with diverse media, students will develop critical skills to analyse the impact of artistic activism on society and its ongoing relevance in today’s social justice movements.

Planning and pedagogy of authentic forms of arts education are addressed through the curriculum subjects of Media and Visual Arts. The school curriculum provides the framework for planning sequential, inquiry-based and engaging learning opportunities for primary school children. Experiential learning opportunities and reflective practices facilitate the development of practical understanding of the scope and nature of arts learning across the primary school years. Personal media and visual arts literacy are promoted as the foundation for teaching within a lifelong learning framework. Pedagogical understandings and practices that support the development of children’s identities and agency through their creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and communication of ideas are studied, practiced with children, and reviewed using an improvement cycle framework.

Visual and Media Arts Education

This subject was previously known as EDE262 Visual and Media Arts for Early Childhood.Through engagement with Visual and Media Arts, this subject focuses on the principles, planning and delivery of authentic forms of arts education in early childhood settings for children aged birth – 8 years. Inquiry-based learning that embraces exploration, creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and the communication of ideas is presented within a child centred learning context. Planning for arts learning is examined within the framework of the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care, and the Australian Curriculum; and organising programs, environment provocations and pedagogical documentation around a cyclic process of observation, study and responsive planning are practised. Familiarise yourself with the principles, planning and delivery of arts education in early childhood settings. Develop arts literacy and capability through personal investment in visual and media arts praxis, reflection and appreciation.

Visual and Media Arts for Early Childhood

How has visual culture changed the way we see the world? What can we learn by looking more closely? In this subject you will be introduced to the study of visual cultures through the radical developments in art, film, design and media that reshaped the world from the 19th century to the 1960s. Focusing on key examples from revolutionary movements such as Surrealism, Dada and Pop, you will engage with a range of mediums and works to develop critical skills in visual analysis and cultural literacy. You will see how the political, social and technological changes of modernity were articulated through new visual forms and reflect on how this has shaped our contemporary image culture. In this subject you will learn how to place visual culture in theoretical, critical and historical contexts. You will apply knowledge in practice during your weekly two-hour seminar, and test your responses through a range of critical and creative tasks. This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject introduces students to the principles of spatial and temporal design with a focus on the fundamentals of animation. Through a series of technical and conceptual activities, students will have the opportunity to experiment with animation techniques and discern its role as a medium for communication.

This subject introduces students to the fundamentals common to art and design practices. The aim of the subject is to increase awareness of possibilities and to equip students with conceptual tools that can be used for generating, developing and refining art and design ideas. As well the subject develops analytical skills for trouble-shooting when an art or design work is not developing as intended.

In this 3rd year level subject, students will engage with advanced digital product design concepts and have an opportunity to synthesise them through the conceptualisation, design, iteration and development of a comprehensive digital product that addresses real world design problems.
