The course provides an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of sport managers, relationships between professional administrators and volunteers, and current issues facing the industry.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have completed: 1304HSL Intro to Sport Management / 2309HSL Sport Management Principles / 2309THS Sport Management Principles.

Within society, high Performance sport can be viewed through both economic and social lenses. The dominance of the economic lens means that, in many cases, the business model developed by high performance sport organisations will determine the engagement approach adopted and the value provided to stakeholders.
This subject aims to develop in students an understanding of business model structures, strategies and activity systems that operate in, and are relevant to, the high performance sport industry, as well as the contribution that the industry can make from a social and community perspective.

The Business of High Performance Sport

The ability to make sound decisions in High Performance Sport is critical to maximizing performance outcomes. In order to do this, practitioners need specific knowledge and skills in data analysis techniques, in addition to the ability to present data in a meaningful way to a variety of audiences. This subject is based on contemporary data analysis techniques focusing on determining practically meaningful differences in athletic performance. A range of approaches will be explored to allow for analysis of both individual and group data. The aim of this subject is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to analyse and interpret data of relevance to sports science and athletic performance and effectively present the results.

Data Analysis and Interpretation for High Performance

The Sport Development Systems is a capstone course in the Sport Management major. This course provides students with a critical understanding of development within the Australian sport system. An underlying theme is the tension between developing participation rates and performance standards. This course provides an overview of the various political, economic, social, environmental, demographic and technological factors that influence the delivery of sport. The mass media have a unique fascination with sport. Sport obtains its own section in newspapers, as well as in radio and television broadcasts. There are numerous magazines devoted to sport. Coordination of relations between sport organisations and media has become a specialised realm of sport management.Sport organisations coordinate their media relations through the Sports Information Director (SID) or media liaison officer. That person is responsible for developing relations with reporters and editors, formulating a media plan, and providing information to the press. The planning, implementing and evaluating of major sport events is characterised by dynamic management environments that bring together a wide array of stakeholders. Large multi-sport events present both logistical and organisational challenges for host cities, as well as opportunities to plan for and create a range of short- and long-term benefits and event legacies. This course will introduce students to the complexity of managing major sport events. Students will study a number of planning, operations and event legacy management issues across the life span of major sport events, from the bid phase to event evaluations. This course will offer students practical as well as theoretical insights into the dynamic and at times challenging nature of sport event management.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have completed: 2018HSL Organising and Staging Major Sport Events / 2018THS Sport Event and Facility Planning
