Master of Epidemiology

Public health is a broad field which aims to improve and protect the health and well-being of the general population. As a public health practitioner, you can make a real difference to the lives of local, national and international communities.Public health practitioners help individuals and communities to have greater control over their health and well-being, and to influence organisational and political environments in ways that lead to better health for all. They work across the lifespan, including the early years, child and adolescent health, and healthy aging to support population health.We realise that public health is such a broad area, which is why this masters degree offers a variety of elective units to allow you to specialise in an area of interest. Master of Public Health

This program introduces health professionals from a range of backgrounds to the key elements of public health. Making Development Matter

The purpose of this subject is to provide you with an understanding of the role of epidemiology in public health. You will learn about the different epidemiological study designs, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to apply those methods to address public health problems. You will learn how to write a clear and comprehensive research proposal and to critically appraise epidemiological studies from the public health literature. You will be introduced to the basic principles of infectious diseases surveillance and the investigation of disease outbreaks and you will learn about the epidemiological principles of screening.

In this subject you will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of epidemiology and epidemiological study designs and research concepts. These will be of direct relevance to the role of food and nutrition in the prevention, causation and management of disease. Nutrition measurement techniques for the assessment of diet and body composition of individuals and populations will be covered in depth. You will cover sources of data on mortality and morbidity, measures of disease prevalence, incidence and risk, chance, bias and confounding variables of relevance to nutritional epidemiology. Standard parametric and non-parametric statistical techniques will be reviewed, and you will have the opportunity to use statistical software programs to analyse a population dataset.

Study eating patterns and measure how diet, body mass and types of food can prevent or contribute to disease. Discover how a diet rich in nutritional value reduces risks to human health, and helps people to live longer.

Nutritional Epidemiology and Research Skills

Communicable Disease Epidemiology will explore communicable diseases of humans from an epidemiological perspective. It will provide an introductory overview of the basic biological knowledge needed to understand the interactions within and between populations of microbes, human and other animals. Students will learn to use epidemiological techniques to understand infectious disease surveillance data, disease transmission, and risk factors for infection. The subject will focus on how these methods are used in contemporary public health practice and applied in population-based strategies such as for sexually transmissible infections, blood borne viruses and enteric infections. The subject will introduce students to regional and global aspects of infectious diseases, particularly their social and ecological determinants, emergence and burden.

Communicable Disease Epidemiology

This subject explores the principles, theories and practice of epidemiology. Students are provided with a comprehensive introduction to the collection and interpretation of epidemiological data within the framework of health, health care delivery and human services. The subject content covers the broad areas of disease distribution, study design, basic quantitative measures, causality, interpretation of data and critical appraisal of the literature. These concepts are explored in the context of contemporary health and health care issues such as non-communicable diseases, cancer screening, mental health, domestic violence, disability and drug and alcohol addiction. The subject focuses on the development of essential skills for logical and scientific assessment and evaluation of the literature. Critical thinking, scientific and analytical competencies are emphasized throughout this subject which builds core skills essential to health and health services research, planning and evaluation of programs and policy formulation.

Introduction to Epidemiology

This subject was previously known as Health Research Methods.
Students will be provided an introduction to the fundamental principles of research methods and epidemiology, biostatistics, their use and relevance in health research. The emphasis is on application of these designs and methods to topics that may include, but are not limited to, chronic diseases; infectious diseases; environmental, social, behavioural and nutritional factors; sexual health; and occupational health.

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components. The first of two supervised independent Masters project subjects involving detailed research in/of a topic to be chosen in consultation with the relevant discipline supervisor. This subject focuses on the preparation and design of that research, and must be taken prior to HUMN610 Masters Research Project 2. Masters Research Project 1

This subject aims to provide you with the opportunity to apply expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in a body of knowledge of project management to independently execute a significant research-based project or piece of scholarship.
This subject is the second of two subjects (MPM 9501 and MPM 9502) that culminate in a 9,000 word research project that demonstrates a high level of synthesis of concepts and prepares you for lifelong learning in pursuit of personal development and excellence in professional practice.
You will implement their pre-approved plan to investigate and report on special issues pertaining to a relevant research topic from within the area of Project Management, and within the context of a specialism of interest, if applicable.

Follow up your work in Masters Research Project Part A and complete your in-depth research project. Dig further into your chosen research area using qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. Recommend ways to address project management problems.

Masters Research Project Part B

This subject will provide you with the opportunity to apply expert, specialised cognitive and technical skills in a body of knowledge of project management to independently plan and execute a significant research-based project or piece of scholarship.
This subject is the first of two subjects (MPM 9501 and MPM 9502) that culminate in a 9,000 word research project that demonstrates a high level of synthesis of concepts and prepares the student for lifelong learning in pursuit of personal development and excellence in professional practice.
You will generate a plan to investigate and report on special issues pertaining to a relevant research topic from within the area of Project Management, and within the context of a specialism of interest, if applicable. You will undertake a comprehensive literature search and literature review in accordance with a research proposal prepared in the pre-requisite MPM 8501 subject. Projects which involve empirical research will need to apply for human research ethics approval as a pre-requisite for subsequently conducting the research in Masters Research Project Part B.
