History of Intelligence

This subject provides a critical introduction to the causes, strategies, and tactics of terrorists and violent extremists in the twenty-first century, and some possible solutions to these problems. It explores the global origins and history of terrorism as a means of political coercion, evaluates the effectiveness of terrorism as a strategy, and examines how terrorism and violent extremism are changing in the twenty-first century. Attention will be given to case studies looking at various religious, political, and far-right and far-left ideological terrorist and violent extremist organisations. By the end of this unit, students will gain an understanding of the dynamics that underpin twenty-first century terrorism and violent extremism, as well as evaluate both hard and soft approaches to countering these. Special attention will be focused on the sources of successful and ethical countering strategies; understanding mechanisms of radicalisation to and from violent extremism; evaluating proportionate state response to terror and violent extremist threats; and assessing the role of new technologies such as social media on how terrorist groups operate.

Explore the range of law enforcement and societal response options available to governments. Understand terrorism as a strategy and as a tactic, recruitment and group dynamics, narratives and the role of global media, and cyber terrorism.

Terrorism and Counterterrorism in the 21st Century

This subject explains the laws introduced by the Australian government in response to terrorism, from those enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks to those recently passed in response to Islamic State. It focuses on theories of prevention, the impact of these laws on Australia&#39;s criminal justice system, and questions of accountability and human rights. The course also considers policy strategies for countering radicalisation and violent extremism.This subject examines Australia&#39;s legal responses to terrorism. Students will understand diverse threats of terrorism and extremism, including Islamist fundamentalism, right-wing extremism, and growing threats related to conspiracy thinking. Students will critically analyse Australia&#39;s legal responses to these threats and their compliance with human rights. They will examine case law and sentencing judgments to understand how Australia&#39;s counter-terrorism laws are applied and interpreted in practice.

Previously the professional military has played three principal roles. It has protected states, waged wars in pursuit of national interests, and helped maintain international order. Recently, major inter-state wars have disappeared, but unconventional conflicts, insurgencies, and terrorism have increased. This subject focuses on how the military responds to the changing global security situation, with a primary focus on terrorist threats. Investigate how the military responds to terrorist threats and has become a counterterrorism tool. Examine the counterinsurgency role of the Australian military since 9/11, along with peacekeeping and nation building operations

‘The epic project of police’ has expanded since 9/11, but the study of policing continues to be neglected in social and political sciences. This course rectifies this &#39;gap&#39; by inquiring how &#39;counterterrorism&#39; is transforming police and policing at the local, national, international and radically changing power dynamics. Students examine theories of policing and the emergence of the modern police before turning to new policing regimes to counter and prevent terrorism including transnational policing and the role of the private actors.

The subject introduces students to scenario planning and simulation (serious game) techniques as critical thinking tools in the context of security policy analysis and planning. In the first modules, students are introduced to the broad logic and use of scenarios and simulations, as well as to their strengths and weaknesses. The second part of the unit is structured around one main contemporary security and criminology-related question that is examined in detail using scenario planning techniques and the conduct of a serious game. Students enrolled in this unit will take the role of the counter terrorism expert.

Decision Making, Scenario Planning and Simulation in Counter Terrorism

This subject was formerly known as PICX955 Simulation in Counter Terrorism
This subject provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gain throughout their program of study to a real world crisis. By participating in a dynamic simulation, students will be required to solve problems and find solutions to real world challenges. Students will be assigned to an executive team that includes students with different skill sets and knowledge. These executive teams may include strategists, intelligence analysts, criminologists, counter terrorism experts, and cyber security analysts. Students enrolled in Simulation in Counter Terrorism will perform the role of the counter terrorism expert. Their mission will be to formulate solutions by employing the academic, research, analysis and workplace skills they acquired throughout their program. In particular, they will be required to use their knowledge of network analysis to provide detailed assessments of the evolving situation/scenario. They will also be responsible for the counter terrorism sections of ministerial briefing papers that each group will have to provide as part of their assessment tasks. The student will be required to make policy recommendations based on his assessment of the situation.

Take on the role of a counter terrorism expert in a dynamic simulation of a real-world crisis. Draw on your theoretical and practical knowledge to assess the threat and problem solve. Formulate policy recommendations based on your experiences.

Simulation in Counter Terrorism

This subject was previously known as PICX818 Global Counter Terrorism in the Australian Context
This subject will examine the structure and components of global counter-terrorism policies and initiatives. It will explore the relationships between foreign policy, international relations, and community dynamics exposing students to the complexity involved in delivering and evaluating effective solutions to the dynamic security threats posed by violent extremism. It will consider the complex and inter-connected roles played by organisations at a global, national and local level including the United Nations, Attorney General’s Department, Office of Premier and Cabinet, Multicultural NSW and a range of NGOs. Contemporary literature drawn from terrorism studies and real-world case-studies will expose students to important theoretical arguments relating to radicalisation, deradicalisation, and desistance and how these impact on the delivery of effective counterterrorism strategies.

You’ll explore strategic counter terrorism with a focus on radicalisation, countering violent extremism and terrorist narratives. Debate responses, how terrorism ends and the relationship between counter terrorism and human rights. 

This subject was previously known as PICX210 Intelligence and Counter Intelligence.This subject provides an introduction to the fields of intelligence and counterintelligence. It focuses on the strategic, tactical and operational levels of national security, as well as the role of law enforcement and intelligence organisations in protecting the state from domestic and foreign threats. Students will gain an understanding of the history of intelligence, the intelligence cycle, counter-intelligence and intelligence accountability. Students will engage with key case studies from around the world to further understand the issues and challenges in intelligence.

Learn to identify the key agencies in Australia’s national security community. Articulate the relationship between public and private sector law enforcement and intelligence organisations in protecting the state from domestic and foreign threats.

This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, protections for human rights, and the elements of criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

Law, Crime and Justice

This unit gives students the opportunity to engage in the composition of a self-directed research project in their field of specialization. This unit necessitates students to thoroughly engage with the existing research on their topic, using it as a stepping-stone in developing their own research skills. Students will be accompanied in devising a research question, translate this question into a set of research tasks, synthesise an appropriate methodological framework, conduct a literature review, and write up the result of their research as a coherent long research essay. This research relies on utilizing academic secondary sources and does not require original empirical work.
