The Bachelor of Science at Southern Cross University is a flexible degree that allows you to incorporate a wide range of subjects with career-focused science specialisations. You can focus on an area of professional practice by choosing a specialisation in Earth and Environmental Systems, Marine Systems, Forestry Systems or Regenerative Agriculture. These specialisations are identified on your graduating testamur. Alternatively, you can choose a major from Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Environmental Solutions or a shared major from disciplines across the University.You can effectively design your own science degree. All students study seven core units that provide a strong foundation in science, including field and laboratory experimentation and analytical techniques, as well as socio-ecological systems, management and critical thinking. Core skills and knowledge are reinforced and expanded across the three-year program, finishing with capstone research projects in Impactful Science and Practice. The Bachelor of Science is characterised by a high level of practical and field experience in all years, making use of our easy access to a variety of subtropical terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems.

This subject introduces students to the science disciplines underpinning the study of marine and Antarctic environments and the application of science to solve problems in marine and Antarctic disciplines. It provides the foundational skills and knowledge for students in the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science for specialised study in years 2 and 3.Topics that are covered include:• an understanding of Gondwana and geology of Antarctica, sub-Antarctic islands and the surrounding ocean;• ice and climate studies;• the physical and chemical nature of the Southern Ocean;• the terrestrial and marine environment of the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and cool temperate areas, including plants, animals, birds and fish;• the impact of humans on marine and Antarctic environments, including the study of global climate change.The students will benefit from lectures delivered by experts in their field, including guest lecturers, and further develop their understanding through in-class debates and hands-on fieldwork and laboratory practicals (available online).

A deeper scientific exploration of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Dive into the science of ice, climate, and oceanography. Take a look at the geology of Antarctica and the plants, animals, birds and fish that inhabit the region.

Seventy percent of the planet is covered by ocean. This subject introduces students to Planet Ocean through four modules, covering key topics on marine life and the ecology of temperate and high latitude marine ecosystems (Module 1); the ocean system as interactions between physical, chemical, geological and ecological features (Module 2); the role of the oceans in climate change and how climate change affects ocean life and ocean processes (Module 3); and finishes up by considering the responsibilities of humans in the stewardship of the oceans; how human activity impacts the oceans and the challenges and approaches to ocean stewardship (Module 4). We cover the origins of life in the oceans, iconic and ‘weird’ marine life, ‘a day in the life’ of an oceanographer, and a number of topics highly relevant to modern society including technologies for ocean science, responding to climate change, threatened species, and sustainable management of marine resources including fisheries.

KSA101 will provide a background to the science and management of the seas with focus on Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On the completion of this subject, students will demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of the contemporary issues facing Antarctic, marine and coastal environments, and the management strategies used to optimise the value (market and non-market) of these areas.

Explore Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. You’ll learn how governments manage the southernmost coasts and seas of the world. Cover contemporary issues as well as some historical, legal, and political topics.

Ongoing advances in molecular technology, statistics and bioinformatics have revolutionized our ability to gather and apply genetic information. This unit deals with the distribution of genetic variation among individuals, populations and species, and the relevance of such variation to evolutionary processes. Specific topics include selection and adaptive potential; mutation; inbreeding; population divergence; speciation; effective population size and extinction risk. Approaches to the study of genetic variation are explored at levels ranging from pedigree analysis to molecular genomics. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of evolutionary genetics to the conservation, management and restoration of wild populations.

Evolutionary and Conservation Genetics

Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with a wealth of ecosystem services and enjoyment. In this subject, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person or online), you will be immersed in the practices of &#39;geoconservation&#39; and &#39;geotourism&#39;. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to:- Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as &#39;subjects&#39; of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society,- Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment- Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production- Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection- Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods.- Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences.Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. All skills and knowledge required to successfully complete KGA527 are developed within the subject.

Landscape Conservation and Recreation

This subject develops the student&#39;s knowledge of the role and responsibilities of Marine Surveyors and the skills that are necessary for carrying out marine survey work and the preparation of subsequent survey reports. It also considers a number of different survey categories and the respective roles of a number of national and international authorities such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its conventions, the maritime classification societies, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Port State Control authorities.

Marine Surveying and Inspection

This subject develops the student&#39;s knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the Marine Superintendent and the management skills that are required for ensuring that the maintenance of all shipboard machinery and equipment is carried out to standards specified by national and international certifying authorities. It covers the management of documentation, reports and other data regarding ship mechanical and electrical equipment, the development of documented processes, procedures and safety instructions, the reporting of audit and inspection findings and the management of employees involved in the marine superintendency process

Marine Superintendency

In this subject, you will investigate the global role of marine protected areas (MPAs) in balancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable food production. Using examples worldwide, you will study various MPAs and other types of area-based management - from small fishery closures to large world heritage sites, such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Students participating in the subject will have the opportunity to visit four MPAs in Tasmania, engage in discussions with scientists, stakeholders, and park rangers, and perform their own biological and socio-economic surveys to evaluate MPA impacts. During interactive seminars and peer-based tutorials, students will study MPA theory and case studies, develop and communicate MPA management plans, and apply quantitative tools to design MPAs and measure their impacts.On completion of this subject, you will have an understanding of:(1) the different types of MPAs,(2) the trade-offs among ecological and socio-economic outcomes,(3) effective MPA design, enforcement and governance, and(4) progress towards global MPA targets.

This subject gives students an understanding of the functional purpose of the machinery systems used on board a variety of ships. This knowledge can then be applied to obtaining effective engineering design solutions for these systems, so that they can meet their functional purposes within national and international statutory and regulatory frameworks.

Design of Marine Machinery Systems

Become a confident communicator in your target language (Indonesian, Italian, Japanese or Spanish) by developing your aural and oral skills in this practical subject.You will build vocabulary that relates to everyday situations, consolidate your knowledge of elementary grammatical and syntactical structures and develop an understanding of key social-cultural issues and the associated conversational conventions.If you have completed the 101 and 102 units in your target language, if you are a returning language student, or if you have prior beginner knowledge of your target language and wish to hone your conversational skills for work, travel or interest, this subject is for you.
