The aim of this course is to develop your understandings of human rights frameworks to enable them to critically analyse crime and justice using social justice principles.In this course you will use the framework of human rights to explore the intersections of crime and harm, critically analysing how race, class, and gender impact justice outcomes. The course broadens your understandings of crime and justice by exploring the principles of social justice, such as equality and rights, and examining how social structures and the justice system may prevent or facilitate social justice. Human rights are fundamental rights that are inherent to every individual. They are underpinned by concepts of human dignity and the essential equality of all people. The subject takes an interdisciplinary approach to the development, application and cultural relativity of human rights, and how they are placed alongside our notions of global justice.The subject is delivered in three modules. The first module explores the evolution of the liberal conception of human rights, with a focus on how the understanding of rights has changed over time. The second module introduces students to non-Western conceptions of human rights, with a focus on indigenous conceptions. The third module discusses who guarantees protection of rights, and how violators of rights have come to be punished in the international system. The material covered in this subject is global in both its geographic scope and its cultural awareness. The subject will provide you with the tools to make determinations about the nature of human rights in a globalised world.

The study of human rights raises some of the most important issues in Australia and the world. Within the context of international legal relations, this online subject will help you to develop a broad understanding of the underlying principles, structure, institutions and vocabulary of human rights as complemented by national law. You will explore a range of contemporary human rights topics and issues including the origin, content, nature, scope and implementation of human rights, as well as human rights protection in the UN system and regional systems and prohibition of discrimination. Additionally, you may also examine minority rights, human rights and terrorism, human rights and the environment, and Australia and human rights. You will be encouraged to develop your critical thinking and legal analysis skills by reflecting on contemporary human rights issues, including the effectiveness and impact that human rights law has on society.

Human Rights

This subject poses questions about the origins, the evolution, and the nature of the emerging global human rights order. Are human rights the product of a peculiarly European heritage? What was the relationship between French revolutionary declarations of rights and the ensuing terror? How has the language of rights been used by socialists, feminists, imperialists, anti-slavery campaigners and national liberation movements? How have notions of human rights been influenced by the legacy of the holocaust, the Cold War, decolonisation, the sexual revolution, the war on terror, and the rise of authoritarian great powers? Within a historical framework, the subject examines the interplay of ideas, civic activism, politics, and diplomacy. In the process, you will have an opportunity to evaluate the ideas of proponents and critics of universal rights, the different ways that states have responded to human rights, and the new pessimism that surrounds the prospects of human rights.This is a level 2 subject. Drawing on theories and practices derived from critical theory, critical pedagogy, democratic education and community education, students critically explore their place in and relationship with the world, and the power of education as a means for transformation. It explores the development of the Enlightenment and post-Holocaust human rights traditions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and critiques universalism from postmodernist, postcolonialist, decolonial and feminist perspectives. Introduction to Human Rights and Social Justice

This course provides an introduction to the politics of international organisations and international law from the perspective of the International Relations (IR) discipline, with a specific focus on peace and conflict. More specifically, it aims to introduce students to i) the main IR approaches to studying international organisations and law and the key debates surrounding them ii) some of the most influential international organisations and legal frameworks and how they operate and iii) central issues pertaining to international law, norms and organisations in the areas of peacekeeping, conflict prevention and human rights. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2019IBA Politics of International Law &amp; International Organisations, 2019GIR Politics of International Law and Organisations or 2019GIR International Organisations, Peace and Conflict.

International Organisations, Peace and Conflict

This subject measures the ideal of democracy against its capacity to deal with the diversity of the people. You will lstudy how different identities based on class, gender, sexuality, race (among others) articulate, negotiate and contest their place and (mis)representation in democratic life. You will study the heritage of the concept of democracy in relation to its concrete manifestations in nation states, and compare how the democratic ideal of living together in a political community is debated in various contexts. Topics include: sovereignty and Indigenous politics; free speech, censorship and political correctness; the gendered, sexualised and racialized character of culture wars and social change; religious expression and secularism; political activism, civil disobedience and violence; law and justice; and discourses of human rights. Texts include legal documents, petitions, government papers, propaganda, various media, and academic writings.This is a level 3 subject. Diversity Democracy Dissent

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components.
