The Human Rights degree is designed to promote a critical understanding of the human rights discourse. The degree covers modern human rights institutions and how these work for state and non-state actors. The degree also explores the political, historical and philosophical development of ideas about human rights which underpin current systems. In recognition of the importance of a globalised understanding of human rights, the degree explores ideas about human rights from multi-disciplinary, multicultural and multi-religious perspectives, as well as looks at the roles of social movements, grass-roots campaigns and other actors have played in the development of human rights ideas and practices. The degree takes a problematising approach to education, provoking students to engage with a range of ideas and perspectives and to develop their own positions. The degree employs both theoretical and practical learning methods giving students the chance to put their learning into practice and to pursue individual areas of interest more deeply.

This subject seeks to develop both skills and knowledge in the area of mentoring pre-service and graduate teachers and the peer coaching of established teachers. It explores the various dimensions of &#39;clinical supervision: induction, classroom observation, feedback and reflective practice, mentoring and building collegial relationships within communities of practice. In addition, the subject provides participants with a common language for describing mentees’ and coachee’s achievements and progress. The impact of current research on classroom practice will also be explored in order to establish a standard of performance for student teachers, graduates and established teachers. Contemporary resources developed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) will be critically evaluated; particularly the Australian teacher performance and development framework, the Australian professional standards for teachers and the Australian professional standards for principals. The subject also examines contemporary research on the impact of mentoring /coaching programs for early career and established teachers.

Mentoring & Coaching Pre-service, Graduate and Experienced Teachers

This subject was previously known as Online Games and Play.This subject explores the broader spaces and nature of play online, and how it relates to the development of digital forms of gaming. The nature of immersion, and its relationship to interactivity, is examined, investigating how narrative is constructed and communicated through game play. The subject provides critical perspectives on the notion of gamification and the growing area of research centred around videogame streamers and the labour ecosystem of eSports. It examines a series of gaming tropes and themes, games as texts, and the ways that games enter social frameworks to convey, refract, engage with, and resist power structures. This subject was previously known as Online Power and Resistance.The Internet has had a massive impact on our political systems, from grassroots activism through to global politics. This subject helps you to understand how and why this has happened, and why it matters. It explores the new challenges and possibilities for governance created by the Internet, as well as attempts to control the Internet by governments and others. Understand the ways in which people try to exert, and resist, power online. Explore why algorithms, censorship, surveillance, and infrastructure matter, and how they might be reshaped.

Transitioning into your new career as a graduate teacher is exciting and there are many ways this course prepares you for the reality of life as an educator. You will learn about teachers’ work and culture; the ethical, legal and safety issues that arise when working in this field. Because many graduate teachers start their careers as casuals, this subject will cover issues and strategies central to effective casual teaching. You will gain skills in communicating, relating to and reporting to parents and carers in order to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. You will learn strategies for managing challenging behaviour and also develop a practice of critical reflection. This subject will help you develop your professional portfolio and guide you through the process of accreditation (including annotation of evidence required for ongoing accreditation throughout your career).

Teaching Development 4: The Graduate Teacher

A high standard of supervision is central to the retention of research students and the completion of their course requirements. The purpose of this subject is to develop an understanding of what constitutes best practice for supervising research students and provide an opportunity for students to reflect on and enhance their own supervisory practice. Students will deepen their understanding of the processes involved, and develop their skills and personal resources to equip them with the capacity to manage the challenges of supervision. This subject is designed for academic staff who are, or who intend, to supervise students undertaking all levels of research including Masters and Honours dissertations and Higher Degrees by Research.

Supervising Postgraduate Research

This subject is designed to engage you in the ideas of contemporary art through practical application of technical skills and conceptual development. In this subject you will be encouraged to align conceptual development with the acquisition of traditional and contemporary skills across a range of visual art methods. In this subject you will explore drawing through investigation of the elements and principles of the visual language of drawing. You are encouraged to develop the formal, conceptual, experimental and expressive use of this language. *** There are enrolment restrictions which the Curtin Law School have to approve. Students will need to contact <a href="https://students.connect.curtin.edu.au/app/ask" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Curtin Connect</a> requesting permission to enrol in CUR-TAXA6005 Graduate Taxation Study Tour. ***This is a national study tour and allows students to follow the taxation cycle within the Australia taxation system. Over a 10 day period students will visit a Canberra and Sydney and will visit a number of organisations including government agencies such as the ATO, Treasury, Tax Practitioners Board, as well as various professional organisations. The aim of the study tour is that students will immerse themselves in learning to understand and appreciate the roles of everyone involved in the smooth running of the Australian Taxation System.
