This unit looks at the approaches for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and lifecycle emissions at national, entity and even product level. The first part presents the elements of rigorous GHG and energy reporting methodologies using the Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme as a case study. The second part covers the concepts and methodologies related to life cycle assessment (LCA). Greenhouse Gas Reporting and Life Cycle Assessment

This subject will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary environmental health concepts and examine the environmental and ecological determinants of health within the framework of national and international policy. Through this subject you will acquire valuable insights into the intricate relationship between our health and the environment, including the potential impacts of climate change and the benefits of environmental sustainability. You will develop skills in investigating potential pollutants and hazards of local and global concern, including an introduction to the field of toxicology. You will explore ways of assessing environmental health risks, and how to manage these risks through appropriate legislation and regulation. We emphasise the principles and good practices of effective risk communication and community engagement while reviewing lessons learned in public health emergencies. While exploring many of the upstream forces that affect environmental health, including community design, transportation, and energy, we reflect on the collaborative role of public health in enhancing environmental health outcomes.

Environmental Health

This unit addresses the scientific, technological and policy aspects of global warming. This is a global environmental issue that has potentially major implications for all life on earth, including human society. In recent years the subject of global warming has produced an intense international debate over the scientific basis of the measurements and predictions. Climate Change Science and Policy

This is a unit about energy management and in particular, how to minimise energy use, without reducing services, by using energy more efficiently and by reducing waste. An energy audit plays a large role in informing the energy management process. The unit delivers knowledge surrounding the process of implementing energy management programs in commercial and industrial companies. The unit begins with a general description of energy management programs and the framework and standards for implanting such programs before introducing some of the tools and techniques of energy management, including energy auditing and energy data analysis. Energy Auditing and Management

This is a unit about energy sources and how they are utilised to produce power for human society. It is based on a multidisciplinary approach and covers patterns of consumption; energy conversion technology; environmental and social impacts; conventional and alternative sources; energy conservation and options for future energy supplies. This subject was previously known as Sustainable Cities.This subject examines various notions of cities within a sustainability framework. Students will explore urbanisation trends in the context of existing and emerging sustainability challenges by reviewing cities worldwide. Future Cities

This innovative approach to economics focuses on policy implementation for climate action and sustainable development. It moves beyond conventional approaches by reframing economics, accounting and policy within sustainability principles, parameters and processes, so that climate-friendly actions and sustainable behaviours are rewarded, rather than penalised. The focus is on implementation through the re-evaluation of economic activities, the restructuring of accounting narratives, and the used of monitoring and management regimes that support continuous sustainability learning. The subject provides new relevance for many existing methods currently marginalised in conventional policy processes. Students will learn ways of thinking and techniques that utilise new information system technologies. Socio-cultural and biophysical understandings from other sciences are integrated in a range of theoretical and practical perspectives on complex issues that have local and international relevance. The subject will provide an overview of the concepts and principles of sustainable waste management. A critical approach to theories, techniques and methods of sustainable waste and resource management will be introduced in the course to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding on waste management. The subject will cover the subject areas of perceptions of waste, classification and characterization of waste, waste audit, 3R principles, waste collection, transportation, treatment technologies and safe disposal, performance evaluation, and strategy and policy regulation. Sustainable Waste Management

This subject was previously known as Pathways to Sustainability.This subject presents a new set of processes that underpin the movement toward a climate resilient society. Ontologies and epistemologies likely to generate sustainability praxis are examined. Pathways are explored that enable the development and implementation of sustainability, such as: transition management, reflexive governance, cultural value analysis, sustainability policy, sustainability mapping and sustainability planning. Pathways to a Climate Resilient Society

The subject explores environmental governance in the context of areas of global concern and shared international management – focusing on the polar regions, the oceans and the global climate. The concepts of sustainable development and the global commons are crucial ideas governance in these areas. This subject discusses the historical development and contested nature of governance in specific controversies including the management of ocean fisheries, protection of marine biodiversity, whaling, conservation of Antarctica, and addressing the threat of climate change. Major issues and concepts covered in the subject include: &quot;good governance&quot; and international development; the theory of the tragedy of the commons and other hypotheses of collective action problems; shared governance of contested spaces and transboundary resources; and the geo-political context of global environmental governance. These issues are explored through case studies from around the world, and will include some consideration of Australia&#39;s role in the selected examples.
