Occupational Hygienists aim to identify, manage and control occupational and environmental hazards across all industries including advising organisations and local communities about the potential health impacts as a result of exposure to hazards. This course will enable you to develop and upgrade your professional and communication skills in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene. On completion of the program, you’ll be expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in the recognition, evaluation, assessment, and control of potential occupational and environmental hazards, and have a solid foundation of knowledge of the potential impacts of occupational hazards and conditions on exposed populations. You’ll also be able to recommend and evaluate appropriate control measures to prevent, reduce or eliminate exposures to occupational and/or environmental hazards, and to participate in the development and implementation of appropriate occupational hygiene monitoring programs.

Learn how to identify hazards in high-risk environments, like mining, manufacturing and construction workplaces. Assess chemical, physical and biological dangers, and learn to introduce appropriate safety measures.

Master of Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology

Occupational Hygienists aim to identify, manage and control occupational and environmental hazards across all industries including advising organisations and local communities about the potential health impacts as a result of exposure to hazards.This program has been developed for practitioners to acquire skills in occupational hygiene. The course will assist you develop or enhance your skills in the practical aspects of identifying, evaluating, and controlling occupational hazards that could adversely affect the health of workers. You’ll learn about occupational epidemiology, occupational toxicology and the chemical, physical and biological aspects of occupational hygiene. You will apply communication and collaboration skills to demonstrate judgement in professional occupational hygiene contexts. This course can be used as an entry pathway into the Master of Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology.

Learn core occupational hygiene skills, so you can prevent health and safety incidents in your workplace. This certificate is ideal for those already working in high-risk environments, and can be used to gain entry into the related Masters Degree.

In this subject, you will learn about elements of environmental health practice, risk management and health impact assessment including the assessment, correction, control and prevention of environmental health hazards in order to promote health, protect individuals, protect communities and prevent disease (for example, health protection strategies such as immunisation, and tobacco, e-cigarettes control and building control). You will examine aspects of environmental health practice and further develop an understanding of the role of environmental health practitioner in Government and industry settings.

Environmental Health Management

This subject will develop your competencies in applying economic and sustainability principles to health and healthcare policy and decision-making. You will learn about the importance of social, economic and environmental factors as determinants of health, and how health and healthcare in turn impact on the wider economy and the natural environment. You will develop a deeper understanding of how health economics theory and techniques can be used to support sustainable, equitable and efficient access to healthcare for all. You will learn about how the unfolding ecological crisis will impact human health, how healthcare services and systems need to change to become environmentally sustainable, and understand new approaches to economic policy and thinking that can better sustain good health and healthcare in the future.

Sustainable Health Economics

This subject will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary environmental health concepts and examine the environmental and ecological determinants of health within the framework of national and international policy. Through this subject you will acquire valuable insights into the intricate relationship between our health and the environment, including the potential impacts of climate change and the benefits of environmental sustainability. You will develop skills in investigating potential pollutants and hazards of local and global concern, including an introduction to the field of toxicology. You will explore ways of assessing environmental health risks, and how to manage these risks through appropriate legislation and regulation. We emphasise the principles and good practices of effective risk communication and community engagement while reviewing lessons learned in public health emergencies. While exploring many of the upstream forces that affect environmental health, including community design, transportation, and energy, we reflect on the collaborative role of public health in enhancing environmental health outcomes.

Environmental Health

This subject introduces students to management in diverse health care environments. It explores the complexities and challenges of health care management, and examines theoretical and contemporary evidence-based practice perspectives through review of current research. Concepts of managing change, motivation, conflict,  information, human resources, community engagement and organisational behaviour are discussed in the context of Australian health care  organisations. This subject is suitable for health professionals working in leadership and management roles, and those aspiring to do so.

Managing in a Health Care Environment

This course aims to introduce a range of environmental factors, which may pose a risk to the health of human populations. It also addresses risk assessment and management methods for evaluating and controlling such risks. A variety of diseases associated with exposure to common occupational and environmental factors will be discussed. In addition, there will be an overview of the historical, legislative and administrative aspects of occupational health.

Environmental and Occupational Health

This subject investigates the components of a healthy and sustainable food system (production to consumption) from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on the domains of health, environment, economy and society. Students will critically analyse the concept of the ‘Sustainable Diet’ and the changes needed to ensure that our food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable. Students will be exposed to the views of the food industry, food producers and public health experts on food sustainability and will reflect on the implication their own food choices and their impact on the environment. This subject combines case-study and experience-based learning and exposes students to current and emerging trends and issues, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills to improve our food system. The driving forces behind this subject is our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the challenge of an increasing world population combined with increasing food insecurity, the rise of nutrition-related chronic diseases and the bi-directional relationship environmental change and the changes needed to ensure that the food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable.

Food, Health and Environment

This subject provides an introduction to public health and understanding the health of populations. It examines how public health approaches have evolved to tackle changing threats to population health. Topics covered include: the development of public health over the last two centuries, definitions and models of health, changing patterns of health, the measurement and monitoring of health, understanding public health data, the importance of the early years of life, communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health, Indigenous health and health services, vulnerable populations, climate change and environmental degradation and their impact on health, the development and implementation of programs to protect and promote health, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the application of systems theory to public health issues. The focus will be on Australia but examples from overseas will be used to highlight and compare issues in the global context. Two cases studies will focus on Australian public health success stories and the Australian bush fires during the summer of 2019/20.

Environment Society and Health

In this subject, you will examine the health status of humans as individuals, groups, and populations in relation to their adaptation to environmental changes. You will gain an understanding of the interrelationship between the physical environment and human health and how to communicate environmental health issues in preparation for environmental health practice. The main topics include humans, their health and disease in relation to ecosystems, toxicology, air and noise pollution, wastewater systems and management, water and soil quality, land use, and chemical, biological, and radiological hazards.This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students, who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences.

This subject introduces students to the Australian and global food systems and will explore key stakeholders that influence our food supply such as government, food industry, consumers, the healthcare industry, and other NGOs. Through a series of activities, the students will begin to unpack the complex relationships between sustainability and food and nutrition security and how they relate to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students will identify the bi-directional interplay between key food commodities, human health and environmental sustainability and their impact on vulnerable communities. In this subject, students will also learn about traditional food ways, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander food ways, and other dietary patterns and their contribution to a sustainable food system.

Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems

This subject was previously known as SUS214 Sustainability, Ecology and Communities.
This subject develops knowledge of the conceptual, practical and policy aspects of sustainable development. The subject focuses on the implementation of sustainability at a local and sub-national level. Systems thinking and resilience are presented as key tools to both understand sustainability problems and develop sustainability solutions within socio-ecological systems. The implementation of sustainability is then explored through governance, business and civil society approaches.
