In modern health and social care, actions and advice must be based on reliable and up-to-date information and evidence. Studying this subject will equip you with foundational skills for using information and evidence in social care and health professional practice. With a focus on learning and decision making, you will identify sources of information and evidence for health and social care, analysing how research and evidence-based practice has improved outcomes for individuals and communities. Examining the strengths, limitations and challenges of using an evidence-based approach in health and social care, you will explore the evolution of information and evidence and its impact on the development of health professional education and practice.Using a structured approach to locate, collate and present information and evidence in contextually appropriate ways in a range of formats, the subject will also help you to develop your research skills.

Examine sources for knowledge and decision making in health and social care. Consider the strengths and challenges of using an evidence based approach in the industry. 

Health and social care professionals today work collaboratively with each other and with clients, families, carers and communities to achieve the best outcomes for overall health and well-being. In this subject, you will gain an introduction to the history and context of health professional practice, applying principles of interprofessional practice in contextually appropriate ways. With a focus on interprofessional practice in healthcare, you will explore the roles and functions of people working within health and community service organisations and how these people can work together to deliver health care. Examining ethical, moral, legal and professional standards, and processes for meeting these standards, you will reflect on and analyse factors that will shape the development of your own professional identity. The subject will also help you to identify career opportunities within health and social care.

This subject will explore strategies to strengthen the capacity of individuals, families and groups to actively participate, contribute and engage in the health and wellbeing of their communities. This subject will build the knowledge and skills needed to coordinate services, projects and activities that result in improved health and wellbeing and increased &#39;social capital&#39;. Evidence-based models of community development, citizen engagement and participation, health promotion, peer support, networking and activism will be explored and applied through real-world case studies. Particular emphasis will be placed on mitigating the risks and barriers that contribute to poorer health and wellbeing outcomes for vulnerable, marginalised and isolated population groups.

This subject engages students with the primary research literature dealing with factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. Community strategies and social programmes focused on supporting healthy autonomous life for people with dementia, are examined in the context of personal experience and social outcomes, building a knowledge base aimed at evaluation of evidence from the primary research literature. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 2

This subject examines social, therapeutic and environmental factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. The impact of dementia on individuals, and provision for the rights and needs of people with dementia, are the focus of the curriculum. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 1

You will develop the ability to critically analyse approaches to Case Management in the human services areas of Disability and Aged Care. You will develop advanced knowledge of the definitions, theories, characteristics and processes of case management, the influences on its historical development and practicemodels and critical issues and ethical dilemmas in case management. You will use cognitive and analytic skills to develop their understanding of professional practice, the process of case management and the difference between case management and other service delivery approaches. Case Management for Consumer Directed Care in Disability and Aged Care

Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines the evolution of disability practice with particular emphasis on the reforms arising from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of participation and inclusion and develop professional skills in effective communication, advocacy, support coordination and capacity building.

Contemporary Disability Practice

This subject was previously known as Imagining Health in Social and Cultural Contexts.An introduction to sociological and anthropological perspectives on health, wellbeing illness and disability in society; understanding the contribution of the biomedical and social models of health for transdisciplinary practice for nurses and allied health: professionals. Incorporating contemporary, historical, social and cultural perspectives in local and global contexts to identify social determinants of health. Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

This course examines ageing and disability-friendly design, planning principles, and policy as they relate to the natural and built environments. You’ll learn to apply these planning and design principles to analysing the home, transport and mobility, the workplace, leisure and recreation facilities, and urban spaces. Crucially, you will develop an understanding of the impact of natural and built environments on people who are ageing or living with disablement.
