The Master of International Relations provides a comprehensive foundation in the core skills required for managers and analysts working in foreign affairs, international trade, defence, and national and international security. It combines theory and practical analysis to examine global issues like war, poverty, security, economics, trade and diplomacy.The Master of International Relations requires 2 years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). In this subject you will be introduced to the regulatory environment in which applied science enterprises operate. In particular, you will explore the regulatory challenges of product safety, biosecurity and environment protection, as well as business practices inherent in product development, manufacture and commercialisation. You will gain familiarity with various bodies (including local, state and federal government) that regulate applied science enterprises, learn how various tools including Australian and international standards support regulatory compliance by business, and apply your knowledge to explore questions of compliance in work-based scenarios.

This subject explores the nature of contracts in business to business relationships. You will examine the legalities surrounding contracts, including different types of contracts and important clauses. You will also learn the processes involved with contract administration, including contract variations, performance management and dealing with contract disputes, both from a contractor and client perspective. Through a case study analysis, you will investigate and resolve issues related to supplier performance and dispute resolution. As a major assessment task, you will develop an organisational contract management artefact to assist others with managing contracts.

No matter what construction profession you enter, a fundamental knowledge of law and contract administration is essential to your career.  Law touches upon the construction industry in many ways through legislation, law of contract, law of torts and equity law. This subject will focus on the tax administration of the Australian taxation system. The subject is designed to introduce students to the way in which the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) administers income tax legislation and associated legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act.

Get to know the building blocks of Australian tax. Understand how the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) works – including income tax legislation and the Taxation Administration Act.

Fundamentals of Tax Administration

This subject was previously known as BLW41 Tax Administration.The aims of Taxation Administration are to give you a basic understanding of the administration of the Australian Taxation system and the role various authorities play in the administration of taxation laws. The subject introduces you to the requirements to lodge an annual income tax return and associated elections, which then result in the Australian Taxation Office issuing an assessment. We will consider the various means by which outstanding taxation payments can be collected by the ATO. Disputes are common regarding the imposition of taxation and a review of the objection and appeals process will be considered. As the administrator of the Australian taxation system we will consider in depth the role of the Australian Taxation Office including their legislated powers. As a means of deterring taxpayers from not complying with their taxation affairs a strict penalty regime is imposed. Other areas we will consider will be the use of ATO Rulings and the role of a Tax Professional. We will also consider the Commissioner’s remedial power, some state taxation administration powers and topical issues in taxation administration. This subject also includes a field trip to the Perth offices of the ATO and engages with Inspector General of Taxation who presents a yearly lecture as well as a workshop with the Tax Practitioners Board.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’.
