Law, Crime and Justice

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Social Problems and the Law

This subject is a critical introduction to the Australian legal system that addresses the operation, aims, and institutions of criminal justice. It equips students with foundational knowledge of the operation of criminal justice and how the legal system addresses basic questions of criminological and sociological importance. The subject addresses the relationship between crime and law in Australia; the making of laws by the Parliament and Courts; venues and methods of legal adjudication and interpretation; and the complex interactions between actors that comprise the legal system, including lawyers, police, magistrates and the media. The sustainability of the legal system is evaluated in its historical, ethical, economic and social context.

Introduction To The Australian Legal System

Failure to keep up to date with employment law can lead to fines and other penalties. This course helps prepare you for a career in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management by building the skills necessary to navigate Australia&#39;s legal system. It begins with a review of the foundations of the legal system before examining the system of laws governing employment in contemporary Australia. Through this course, you will develop necessary problem solving skills to use in workplace settings. This course is not available to LAW students unless the student is also enrolled in a Double Degree Program majoring in Employment Relations and where it is undertaken as a compulsory course.Students should not enrol in this subject of they have previously completed 3015EHR Employment Relations Law and 2015EHR Introduction to ER and HR Law at Griffith University.

You will learn how to find and interpret the principal sources of law as well as apply legal principles to solve problems. This subject was previously known as Police, Courts and Corrections.Police, Courts and Corrections explains the processes that govern the way crimes are investigated, tried, and punished. The course begins with an overview of the aims and functions of the criminal justice system with consideration for the laws and justice principles that underpin it. It then examines the roles and functions of the police, courts and corrective services and the process through which a criminal case progresses through the system, concluding with some reflections on alternatives to traditional practice. Throughout this course, consideration is given to understanding the powers, responsibilities and accountabilities of key criminal justice actors as well as the application of justice principles within the system. The course particularly references the Queensland criminal justice system, however general principles are common to all Australian systems.

Police, Courts and Criminal Law

Cover principles of common law, equity, statutory provisions, interpretation and enforceability in relation to contracts. Use critical thinking, communication and judgement to analyse case law, persuade and find solutions.
