Master of Sports Coaching

This subject was previously known as EDP383 Health and Physical Education.
This subject introduces students to health and physical education in the contemporary Australian primary school curriculum, where emphasis is on developing children’s health and physical literacies within safe and lifelong learning frameworks so they are able to flourish as healthy and active citizens. With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop health and physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus.
This subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit teaching about health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills in the early childhood years, including observation and practise of fundamental motor skills (FMS), assessment of FMS and appropriate interventions, is addressed. Advanced movement skills and strategies, components of personal, social and community health, fitness, spatial awareness and games-based teaching models are also explored.

Health and Physical Education

Childhood development occurs on a continuum, with rapid physical, social, emotional and cognitive change occurring in primary school-aged children. In this subject, you will explore the fundamentals of curriculum theory and teaching in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) component of the primary school curriculum. Engaging in a variety of learning experiences, you will examine the theoretical and practical aspects of this key learning area, with different approaches to learning and recognition of the needs of students of differing abilities. This subject provides you with opportunities to explore current research-based knowledge for teaching movement skills and demonstrate your knowledge of teaching and assessment strategies, class management and organisation skills for safe HPE teaching. You will also critique, design and implement lesson sequences that integrate diverse approaches to K-6 HPE teaching and learning.

Health and Physical Education in the Primary School

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Personal Development & HPE

This subject will enable pre-service educators to develop a sound understanding of the importance of supporting the physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing of young children for their development and learning. The subject explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination. Using a play-based approach to curriculum and safe and supportive environment, students will be able to plan quality fundamental movement experiences to enhance the outcomes for young children in the early years making links to the relevant National and State curriculum and Frameworks.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Health, Safety and Physical Education in Early Childhood

This subject was previously known as EDE282 Health and Physical Education in Early Childhood.
This subject investigates health, and wellbeing factors related to the development and care of young children (birth - 6 years). This includes examining social and emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development of children from birth to 8 years. Mandatory health, safety and child protection policies are examined together with appropriate strategies that educators in early childhood settings can effectively implement to enhance the outcomes for young children. These strategies will not only help maintain a healthy early childhood environment, but will also improve outcomes for the whole community within an early childhood educational context. The subject also explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination and how educators can provide children with quality fundamental movement experiences.
