Master of Sports Coaching

Is your passion to work in the sport, exercise, health or fitness field? The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science will develop your knowledge and skills to apply the science of sport and exercise and develop interventions that improve sport performance, health, and fitness, and assist in the prevention of chronic diseases. This subject provides an introduction to health psychology in the Australian context. You will learn about how psychological theory can be applied to understanding health enhancing behaviours and health risk behaviours. In addition you will explore the impact of living with illness and pain and strategies for improving health and quality of life.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Delve into the connections between people’s minds and bodies to better understand wellbeing. You’ll explore both the positive and risky behaviours that can influence people’s health. Touch on the connection between stress and illness. 

Games and play constitute a part of everyday life. Formal or informal, solitary or shared, physical or virtual, realistic or fantastical, organised or spontaneous, games are a means of escaping the ‘real’ world, or exploring it in new ways. Shared values can be reinforced through play, either by celebrating those who display ‘virtue’ in resplendent forms, or shaming those we believe to be ‘bad sports’. But how are these norms of ‘fair play’ shaped, by whom, and how can they change over time? How can urban sports such as skateboarding and parkour be seen as ‘subversive’ and framed as a public menace, and yet offer opportunities for personal expression and communal belonging? How are video games shaping novel understandings of embodiment, avatars, and interaction, and how are e-sports influencing the future of play?Meanwhile, more ‘traditional’ forms of sport are undoubtedly among the most influential institutions in Australian society. No less than three Australian Test captains and tennis players have been recognised as Australian of the Year. Prime Ministers and other political leaders desperately spruik their team affiliations as markers of their relatability, and Victoria has not one, but two public holidays dedicated solely to sporting events. But why is this the case? Why does sport seem to possess such an outsized influence in Australian society? And what implications does this have for the values, norms, principles, persons, and spectacles that we celebrate? Sport can unite and foster community-building, but it can also divide and be rife with forms of exclusion based on race, gender, sexuality, faith, age, and class. In short, sport may purport to be ‘fair’ while in reality proving ‘foul’. In this subject, we address cultural theories of sports and games, and explore how forms of play can engender more pleasurable, affirming, and accommodative social worlds.This is a Level 3, online, entirely asynchronous subject, meaning there are no live lectures or tutorials, and instead students can work through the content on their own schedules (while, of course, keeping in mind the assessment deadlines). In 2024, this Term One subject will commence on January 8 and should finish before the last week in February. However, it is possible to submit the final assessment prior to the deadline and complete the subject.

In this subject you will learn the essentials of human nutrition that improve and sustain optimal performance for sport and exercise for athletes and active individuals. This subject will cover topics including assessment of energy needs, dietary intake and body composition in athletes; training and competition nutrition, sports foods and supplements; nutrition for specific sports and life stages and current issues in sports nutrition.

Weigh up the nutritional demands of athletes. Isolate nutrition’s role in muscle gain or fat loss and optimising performance. Tackle subjects like sports supplements, fluid intake and the nutritional challenges that can affect older active individuals.

Nutrition for Sports Performance

This subject introduces students to major theoretical and empirical perspectives on the psychology of health and wellbeing. It examines the psychosocial determinants of health and wellness as well as psychological theories of health protection and illness prevention. Issues relating to the psychological aspects of illness causation and interpretation, prevention, maintenance of primary prevention, and chronic diseases will be covered. Further, the subject will cover major sources of stress and models of stress and coping. Mechanisms, theories and principles of behaviour change will be explored, as well as communication skills needed to work with groups and individuals engaging in behaviour change. As such, experience in team-building will feature in this subject as students will serve as a resource for each other&#39;s learning experience.

The ability to develop evidence-based, best practice, strategies to prevent sporting injury is essential in high performance sport. This subject will develop knowledge and critical thinking pertinent to the prevention of common injuries seen in high performance sport. This requires understanding and interpreting sports injury epidemiology research as well as detailed knowledge of the aetiology, mechanisms, risk factors and prevention strategies of common injury types.
The aim of this subject is to develop in students an understanding of common injuries that are seen in high performance sport, to improve their ability to critically analyse the literature, and to advance their ability to deliver evidence-based programs for the prevention of injury.

Sports Injury Prevention

Study the influences on typical human growth and development with a focus on emerging motor and social behaviours.Learn the different aspects of human development across the three domains of development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial. Explore models of lifelong human development, motor development models, physical growth and physiological changes across the five primary periods of the lifespan. Examine the influences on pre and post-natal growth and motor development, as well as visual perceptual, social and cognitive development and its influence across the lifespan. We all grow, but how? Study human growth through three domains of development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial. Learn the five primary periods in the lifespan. Think about how visual perception, social and cognitive development come to be.  

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

This subject examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Emphasis on the concepts of promotion, prevention and early intervention will be considered. This subject explores concepts of leadership and management in the context of the development of care from both local and population health perspectives. It enables mental health practitioners and leaders of care to develop strategies to address complex health care alternatives.

Advanced Contemporary Mental Health Practice  2

This subject examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the most widely practiced evidence based psychotherapeutic approach within mental health. Patients with mental health issues require a systematic approach to therapy where outcomes and goals are specified and a planned approach is designed to achieve these outcomes. The Mental Health Nurse working with patients with high prevalence disorders requires special training to develop competence with this modality. This subject will address areas of assessment, formulation, planning, intervention, and evaluation in the treatment of high prevalence mental health disorders. The subject will also address skills training specific to a CBT approach and understanding of other focused counselling interventions.  This subject enables the Mental Health Nurse to develop, implement and evaluate patient centred treatment options whilst reflecting upon the ethical considerations inherent in determining appropriate care.
