Creative and Professional Writing is a foundation subject that enables beginner and more experienced writers to develop their creative and professional writing skills across a range of genres. Throughout the Study Period, you will examine the role of structure, plot, opening lines, character development, dialogue and settings in the production of exciting and effective writing.Through a series of voluntary writing and learning tasks and formal assessment pieces you analyse and critique the following writing styles: Short story writing, dialogue and promotional writing, critical reviews. You are encouraged to become part of an online writing group and to share your work with each other in response to set writing tasks.

Creative and Professional Writing

This subject provides an introduction to practices of writing. The subject explores three aspects of communication: language, critical thinking and composition. It focuses on the strategies successful writers use to incorporate information and viewpoints from existing sources, while at the same time forming and expressing their own independent viewpoint. The subject will be of particular relevance to students in all areas of humanities and social sciences.

Students learn the essential research and writing skills required for their dynamic roles as media and communication professionals. Research and Writing for Journalism

This subject examines current and past contexts for writing for children and young adults in Australia and internationally. It investigates trends, issues, literary concerns and developmental influences on children&#39;s and young adults&#39; publishing, and provides opportunity for the student to develop a folio of short original works relevant to the market.The student will explore social and cultural issues including gender, race and sub-culture, adult and teenage issues, the position of the writer/reader and literary/political demands being made on producers of younger people&#39;s fiction and poetry in texts today.

Explore the blurred boundaries between children’s and young adult fiction. Sift through nursery rhymes, folk tales and fantasy fiction. Spot recurring themes like gender and sub-cultures. Experiment while creating fiction for your own folio.

Writing for Children and Young Adults

Learn the script formats and development processes to design and write a short piece of drama screenwriting, up to 15 minutes in screen duration. The subject requires you to plan and develop a screenplay concept from idea through to an effective design plan. From this, you will then write the first act of your screenplay for critical assessment, before refining the work into a professionally formatted full draft including revised first act, second and third act of your screenplay. The primary focus of the subject is on mastery of the elements of effective screen story design, structure and dynamics.

Drama Screenwriting

Learn the skills and formats used in the production of a documentary script. Using established Australian and International industry criteria and guidelines for documentaries, you develop practical treatment and scriptwriting techniques in conjunction with an understanding of constraints and opportunities.The subject fosters a collaborative environment in which ideas and observations are discussed. You prepare an industry-format package including project synopsis, treatment, script and marketing brief. Through your studies, you develop the skills and techniques required to produce a marketable documentary treatment.

Documentary Scriptwriting

Public Writing offers a broad understanding of the techniques, modes and impacts of persuasive writing within contemporary communications industries, and introduces students to relevant conceptual and ethical issues. As part of a program of study for students of Public Relations, Writing or Communications, thisÂ unit contributes to a professional qualification for those who may wish to work in professional communications, creative industries and/or PR.

Public Writing

Learn about the different ways that information and news is gathered and reproduced. You will learn about the range of print and electronic media professions that exist in today&#39;s information society and explore global trends and issues arising from the growth of information media. The subject introduces news style, exploring how to gather information and write on a range of key topics across news genres. You will also examine ethical issues faced by journalists and consider such issues in connection to your own stories using the framework of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Code of Ethics. These issues will be analysed and discussed in essay form.
