Students will focus on developing their knowledge, skills and practice in urban design and urban planning through a studio and design project. Using a series of practical case studies, urban strategic planning and design exercises and working in groups and individual modules, students take a leading role in developing plans and designs for urban settlements. Attention in the subject is given to establishing projects that deliver net community benefit.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Urban Design Project

In this subject you will develop a comprehensive understanding of natural environmental considerations when planning for regional scale projects. You will undertake planning studio work which will illustrate planning as a process of broader policy framing with a special focus on the spatial manifestation of environmental features and how they relate to place/s. You will grapple with key environmental challenges and address them through statutory and strategic planning perspectives. Topics covered include natural resources, watersheds and catchments.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Planning for Environmental Sustainability

Building on the foundational concepts introduced in semester 1, you will engage in a series of practicums, a site visit and a simple planning project to gain an introduction to plan making processes and learn how they connect with our physical environments. This subject is designed to connect theory to practice, and in doing so, reveal your questions about how, why and what it means to plan well, so you can apply an analytical approach and critical questioning in your later years of study.

Introducing Plan Making

In this subject you will be introduced to the theory, concepts and practice of planning and urban design as an historical development across the world and with a particular focus on historical and contemporary Australia. These developments are studied in the context of progressive planning and architectural movements such as the city beautiful and garden suburb movements and the rise of new urbanism as a design reaction to post WWII suburbs. You will access the role and function of community-based movements on planning and design against the development of legislation and government policy seeking to promote good design. Using case studies, fieldwork and practical work, you will develop skills assessing the key elements of cities and understanding key elements of design.

Exploring Living Environments

The majority of humankind now live in cities, and these cities are bigger and more complex than in any previous historical epoch. The twenty-first century is the Asia-Pacific era and the cities of the region are the urban imaginaries and techno-industrial engines of the world. A critical understanding of these cities, from LA to Vancouver, Tokyo to Seoul, Beijing to Shanghai, Delhi to Mumbai, Hong Kong to Singapore, Bangkok to Manila, also informs the spatial, built form, technological and cultural possibilities of Australian cities. In this subject students explore urban challenges and innovation in contemporary cities of the Asia-Pacific. It is designed to be of interest to all social science students but with immediate utility to international development and planning students. It has a strong emphasis on evaluating policy and programs for making mega-urban regions sustainable and liveable in the twenty-first century.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
