Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Global Security provides understandings of contemporary challenges to security, including terrorism, political violence, transnational crime, global poverty, climate change and environmental stress, and analyses their political, historical and social context. Graduates will have the skills to respond to such challenges in the short-term, and develop robust solutions. Such skills are highly sought after in many public and private sector organisations - security, law enforcement and defence agencies and consultancies, and organisations concerned with aid, human security, development, and human rights.The aim of this course is to equip students with knowledge concerning the nature and complex intertwined causes of security threats so that they can assess a range of types and levels of security threats and offer analyses to work towards effective interventions and long-term solutions to these challenges.Terrorism, and efforts to counter it, has come to reshape national and global politics in the 21st Century. In the Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies major, students will explore the meaning, evolution and complex causes of terrorism and political violence. Students will gain specialised knowledge of various counter-terrorism strategies, policies and politics adopted by governments and security agencies in response to these threats. The major equips students with specialised analytical skills to analyse contexts in which terrorism occurs and evaluate counter terrorism policies and strategies.

You’ll cover terrorism, political violence, crimes that have effects across national borders, global poverty and even climate change. Learn how to combat situations in the short-term and use prevention longer-term.

This for-credit subject is a preparatory mathematics subject intended for students who have not completed secondary school mathematics and who have insufficient background for the more advanced mathematics required for success in MAS162, MAS182 and MAS161. Fundamentals of Mathematics

This subject was previously known as Introduction to Chemistry.This subject introduces fundamental concepts that prepare students for subsequent study in chemistry and support further study in a range of majors. Students learn about the nature of matter at the molecular level. This involves learning language, symbols and representations used to describe matter and chemical reactions. Students develop skills in problem solving and calculations related to chemical quantities, processes and reactions.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Tally and compound simple ideas to get prepared for your chemistry studies. Learn language and symbols, and describe matter and chemical reactions. Calculate ways to solve problems about chemical quantities, processes and reactions. 

Fundamentals of Chemistry

This subject was previously known as Applied Mathematics.This subject provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus, and basic ordinary differential equations. The concepts and techniques will be motivated and illustrated using mathematical models in engineering, the physical and biological sciences, commerce, economics, and the social sciences. Other topics include complex numbers and their applications.You are strongly advised NOT to enrol in MAS182 and MAS164 at the same time. In order to successfully complete MAS182, you will require the knowledge gained from the successful completion of MAS164.Murdoch University advises that students who do not successfully complete MAS164 before attempting MAS182 usually fail MAS182.Students who did not study mathematics at school, did not receive good marks, or have not studied mathematics in a long time should enrol in MAS164 before attempting MAS182. All enrolled students may access Murdoch&#39;s <a href="https://goto.murdoch.edu.au/MathsRefresher" target="_blank">Maths Refresher Program</a>. Learn how to use maths methods to solve problems in science and technology. Topics include the derivative, complex numbers, and the trigonometric functions. Gain confidence applying maths to engineering, science and economics. 

Introductory Calculus with Applications

This is an introductory physics unit, designed to provide a basis for further studies in the physical sciences. It covers a range of topics including measurement, motion, waves, light, thermal energy, electric and magnetic fields. This subject does not require knowledge of calculus. General Physics

In this subject, students will &#39;experience&#39; the world of travel and tourism through the writings of travellers, through the work of social researchers and through their own travel experiences. The main focus of this subject will be the human dimension of tourism, the motivation to travel, the experience of travel and impacts on host communities. Travel and Tourism in Society

This subject outlines the structure of the tourism system, the placement of events, the multiplicity of sectors and industries within those systems. Students are introduced to models of tourism, the global and regional dimensions of tourism and event developments. The subject also provides an introduction to tourism for sustainable development through discussions of the economics of tourism and events and associated sociocultural and environmental issues. Introduction to Tourism Systems

We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food Security

Youth is often presented as a period of storm and stress or a time of crisis. On the other hand youth culture is often something many seek out, envy, and desire. This subject will acquaint students with Australian and international literature concerned with the study of youth. Youth Identities

The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. Two Way Science

In this subject, we explore several current debates on matters of importance to Indigenous communities and mainstream Australia. These topics are all contentious and they are often divisive. We take a deep dive into the discourses both for and against and critically reflect on how they shape political action in these spaces. A broad range of voices are examined, including leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinkers from across the political spectrum and community sector, many of whom hold conflicting reasoning behind their positions.
