Personal Finance integrates economics and personal finance concepts, such as interest rates, time value of money, probability, diversification and biases in consumer finance, to help students appreciate the implications of economic events and the complexities of financial decision-making. You will gain economic and financial literacy to better plan for your future and make more informed financial decisions through practical financial decision-making applications, including saving, investing and planning for retirement, evaluating student loans and mortgages, and personal taxes. This subject was previously known as BAN23 Introductory Finance.This subject introduces students to several crucial finance concepts and areas: time value of money, project and asset valuation, risk and return and price of money. This subject provides you with the skills necessary to understand and address some of the multi-faceted issues of the international financial environment. International finance draws upon ideas and techniques from various fields, including financial management, international trade, macroeconomics, and investment theory.

This subject is concerned with Corporate Finance. The central issues in Corporate Finance are how to acquire and employ or invest funds efficiently. Concepts in Corporate Finance are explored as a set of ideas and principles that work together and their application to corporate financial policy decisions including dividend, capital structure and risk management.

Corporate Finance

Finance defines the process by which individuals and businesses raise and manage funds. Financial skills are a prerequisite for success not only if you are seeking a career in banking and finance, but equally for success in any business career. Indeed, financial literacy is a skill required to successfully manage your personal financial well-being. In this subject, through lessons in our financial trading room and industry-related content, you will examine the nature of the financial environment and the types of financial decision-making required to succeed, both from a business and an individual perspective. You will develop an understanding of the concept of the time value of money, methods of valuing various financial assets such as shares and bonds, and methods of project evaluation. You will consider the trade-off between risk and return in relation to investment assets, and its importance in understanding portfolio theory, and the cost of capital for a business.  Finally, you will be able to define a study plan and potential financial career paths.

This subject examines psychological and social models of behaviour in the context of individual and group decision making. It provides insights into the approaches and perspectives that can be taken to more deeply understand the client-adviser relationship, the advice process and design of financial strategies.

Behavioural Finance

This subject introduces students to the law relating to financial products, financial markets, lending and other finance related activities of Australian banks and other financial institutions in the private sector. Topics covered include the Australian financial system; the relationship between lender and borrower; the statutory regulation of credit; loans to differing forms of business organisations; consumer credit - including Consumer Credit Code, EFT Code of Conduct, payment system and mechanisms, Managed Investment Schemes: real and personal property and the law and enforcement of securities and consequent remedies through the courts/tribunals as well as alternative dispute resolution methods. Prerequisites: AFE215 Introduction to Business Law. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3105AFE: Law of Finance at Griffith University.
