Railway traffic does not simply travel from one place to another along the same single piece of track. In an urban network of rail lines, trains travel in all sorts of directions depending upon customer demand and availability of rollingstock. As a result, rail tracks are required to cross some tracks, and to merge with or diverge from others. This is particularly true where lines converge in population centres, city centres and marshalling yards. There are many types and forms of track crossings, a vast array of methods for merging or diverging trains, and a bewildering range of different types of terminology used to describe these track structures. In this subject those structures are known as turnouts and crossings, and you will be provided with foundational information about their design, defects, operation, maintenance, and terms used; the subject will expose you to some of their specialised applications. The subject is located early in your course and does not require detailed track knowledge, though a familiarity with the components comprising railway track would be an advantage in your study.

Turnouts

This subject covers a wide range of topics such as management and organisation of the air freight industry, economic and market characteristics, airports and aircraft, marketing and pricing strategies, forecasting, cargo handling and terminal management, which will give you a holistic picture of the air transport industry. Both management and operational issues of air transport will be covered. The discussion of air transport will focus on the movement of freight of both domestic and global markets. The subject will also introduce you to policies and regulations that govern the air transport industry.

This subject develops students’ knowledge and capabilities in managing the complex international freight system. The subject familiarises students with the various industry participants and activities involved in managing international freight, with specific focus on freight forwarding. Students are able to gain insights into freight forwarding operations and the day-to-day practical issues that go with the profession.The subject covers freight forwarding activities and tasks in various practical contexts including intermodal freight transport in highly competitive environments, planning and management of project cargo, and humanitarian logistics. The subject explores how emerging issues such as technological, legal and environmental factors affect freight movement, and discusses solutions for improving freight management performance.

The aim of this subject is to develop your ability to manage a research project in the maritime, transport, logistics and related areas. In order to develop your research project skills, this subject explains the research project process. This includes the identification of the research problem, review of relevant literature, data collection and analysis and writing and presentation of the research report. The subject will also teach you how to manage research resources, meet expectations and deliver the project within the established time frame.Given that the purpose of this subject is to undertake a research project in an area of your own interest, there is no specific study guide provided. Instead, you will apply what you have learnt in other subjects to your research project. The research project is conducted under the guidance/supervision of the subject coordinator. Commercial and transport law is both broad and specific in its reach. This subject introduces broad foundations to business law within Australia before specifically applying understanding gained to the laws governing transport within Australia.The business law foundation of this subject includes the study of five (5) major areas of civil law:(1) Contract (which provides the foundation for most commercial transactions);(2) Tort (which identifies compensable civil wrongs such as negligence);(3) Property (which governs ownership and interests in land and also personal and intellectual property);(4) Business entities and relationships (the legal entities and relationships through which business is conducted); and (5) Business transactions (laws governing the conduct of business).Specific transport law and policy topics are then studied including governance and regulation of transport activities; transport policy development and implementation; environmental law responsibilities for transport managers; and transport accident investigation.

International Transport Systems provides students with an understanding of international transport and the way it operates. The subject covers various topics such as transport modes (road, rail, air and water transport) and terminals, global transport system, intermodal transport, transport and logistics, the relationship between transport and economic development, social and environmental impacts of transport, and transport planning and policy. This subject lays the foundation for students to progress into the study of the Global Logistics and Maritime Management courses.

This subject has two compatible parts. The first part of the subject is focused on track maintenance and the second on applications of much of the course learning to incidents and case studies. Both parts of the subject require the drawing together of aspects of design, construction, management, operations, associated infrastructure, turnouts and track behaviour. The intention of this subject is that you obtain a more wholistic view of this rail Diploma course and of the topics you’ve learned and help you synthesise an overview of the infrastructure part of a rail business. You are studying this subject in the latter part of your course so that you can draw upon and relate together the more detailed knowledge and skills you developed in earlier subjects. The assessments in this subject are designed to help build a reflective and synergistic approach to your work in the rail industry.

Track Maintenance and Applications

All track engineering activities and planning are undertaken with the purpose of ensuring a successful, profitable and safe railway business. A significant purpose of the management of the business is to ensure that the maintenance of rail infrastructure is appropriately funded and aligns with the strategic, operational and safety plans of the organisation. Ultimately the goal of all management and track engineering is that trains can run on time, and provide the service for the paying customers. This subject introduces you to management and planning processes in a railway business, and the issues related to train operations, which control or affect the engineer’s work. Because this subject provides you with an overview of management and operations, it is introduced in the first half of the subject, to help you understand the context of the work which you will do as a track engineer.
