The Master of Health Professional Education supports the acquisition of evidence-based practice as a framework, to develop clinicians’ knowledge and skills using contemporary learning and teaching strategies. Graduates from this course will have an advanced level of knowledge and skills to educate and lead education of and for health professionals, with the overall intention of improving safe and quality patient care. The course will enable health educators to work across a range of health education settings and the understanding to employ educational strategies relevant to contemporary healthcare workplaces. The course connects theory, practice and research and the structure of the course enables students to undertake studies relevant to their level of professional development and readiness to undertake further studies. It enables students to exit at an earlier level of qualification as well as continue building their knowledge and skills base due to the scaffolding approach of the program. Students can tailor their course by selecting one elective unit focusing on advancing skill and knowledge.

Authentic assessment approaches are increasingly being applied in contemporary health professional education to actively engage learners in activities that resemble real‐world work interactions and problem‐solving. Health professional educators need the knowledge and skills to plan and design curricula, assessment tools and evaluation strategies as they apply to diverse healthcare settings. This subject will empower you to explore and apply a range of strategies and techniques to optimise health professional assessment and evaluation as a learning and teaching method.To that end, this subject will help students learn about and apply educationally sound practices required to design effective curriculum which promote learner-centred education and inter-professional collaboration, in the context of healthcare professional education. Students will examine curriculum concepts, and establish a familiarity with instructional design that focuses on inquiry-based and evidence-based learning approaches.Students will also be introduced to contemporary approaches to valid and reliable assessment of health professional learners, and be provided opportunities to develop and implement authentic assessment items, as well as practical experience in assessment. Finally, students will then critically analyse evaluation strategies to differentiate their anticipated purposes and outcomes, while taking into consideration the ethical, moral and legal issues.The overall aim is therefore to prepare students to optimise the learner and learning experience through the development of theoretically informed curricula and authentic assessment, and provide the skills to evaluate the effectiveness of this learning in healthcare education.

Curriculum Design, Assessment and Evaluation in Health Professional Education

In health professional education, it is a requirement that educators have the knowledge and skills to successfully facilitate learning for individuals and small groups with diverse learning styles. This subject provides an opportunity for you to critically examine, design and apply health professional facilitation models and strategies as they apply to different healthcare settings.
To that end, you will first explore the contexts of learning and teaching in the workplace setting, and different models of facilitation in health professional education, while considering the characteristics of diverse learners. You will then examine constructive alignment and learn how to develop teaching activities which encourage the use of decision making frameworks to improve critical thinking and reflective practice. Finally, you will explore ethical, moral and legal issues as these relate to your practice as an educator of health professionals. Scholarly evidence will be combined with practical community wisdom as important sources of your learning.
The overall aim is therefore is to provide you with a foundation of the principles and practices of effective health professional facilitation, to empower you to provide the optimal learning environment for healthcare students in their workplace.

Facilitating Learning in Health Professional Settings

Health professional education occurs in diverse and complex health settings. It is a requirement of the health professional educator to understand the context of contemporary health professional education, foundational theories and models, and contemporary approaches to health professional education in order to provide rich learning experiences. This subject helps you to learn about learner-centered approaches to facilitating health professional education in diverse settings. You will explore ethical, moral and legal issues impacting on health professional education, and critically analyse the concept inclusive education in relation to your practice.
To that end, you will first explore teaching approaches and models and theories of learning in the context of contemporary health professional education. You will then explore ethical, moral and legal issues as these relate to your practice as an educator of health professionals. This will include a critical evaluation of your own teaching and learning practice. Scholarly evidence will be combined with practical community wisdom as important sources of your learning.
The overall aim is therefore to provide you with a firm foundation of the theories, applications and priorities informing contemporary health professional education, and support you to relate and apply knowledge to your context.
