The Undergraduate Certificate in Climate Accounting is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate the complex issues of accounting for climate change in businesses.In this program, you’ll gain an understanding of the science of climate change and learn how to analyse the climate policy environment. You&#39;ll also learn about the emerging field of climate accounting, which is quickly becoming a key global response strategy for achieving the 2030 carbon emissions goals and net zero carbon by 2050.You&#39;ll gain hands-on experience collecting and measuring carbon impact using data analytics. We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food security (and insecurity) can drive conflict, propels human migration, and informs our relationship with land and environment. With an overarching global perspective, this subject explores food production and consumption, exploring its sociological, political, historical, economic, ethical, and scientific contexts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Food Security

The environment and environmental crises have had a profound impact on the history of the Australian people and their politics. This subject traces the relationship between people and the environment in Australia from pre-European times to the present-day climate-change crisis. We consider the ways in which Australians have sought to manage, tame and develop the natural environment. We measure the costs of hubris, the lack of ecological humility, and failures in recognising nature’s limits. The subject also considers Australia’s response to environmental issues in its region, where it has oscillated between being a trusted regional partner and crisis responder, to an ecological delinquent. Environmental Crisis in Australia and its Region

In this subject you will develop a comprehensive understanding of natural environmental considerations when planning for regional scale projects. You will undertake planning studio work which will illustrate planning as a process of broader policy framing with a special focus on the spatial manifestation of environmental features and how they relate to place/s. You will grapple with key environmental challenges and address them through statutory and strategic planning perspectives. Topics covered include natural resources, watersheds and catchments.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Planning for Environmental Sustainability

This subject will investigate the past, present and future of agriculture, and its impact on Australia and the world. At the end of this subject, you will have a deeper understanding of the importance and context of agriculture from a range of different perspectives.You will examine the pre-and post-colonial agriculture in Australia and around the world. In understanding the past, you will cover the influence of agriculture on Australian history, landscapes and regional and rural development. What were the historical constraints, what are the current constraints, and what will they be in the future?To address the present, you will investigate the role of agriculture in addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the role of agriculture in global food production and trade, and in the modern Australian economy. The future of agriculture will involve the increased use of precision – in data collection and analysis, forecasting, sensors and robotics. The increase in protected cropping will mean more diseases, but more control over inputs – how will this be achieved in a sustainable way to feed the world? What will the impact of this be on future workforce and society?

Agriculture and Food Security

This course examines how business is changing and how, as a result, there are a growing number of businesses that are focused on responding to major social, environmental, and economic challenges both in Australia and internationally. Businesses are changing the way we approach issues like poverty, homelessness, climate change, and unemployment and alongside these changes we are seeing the growth of social enterprises, impact investment, social innovation, and market-based approaches to creating positive outcomes for people, place and planet.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3038IBA The Business of Changing the World at Griffith University.

The Business of Changing the World

This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Design and renovate healthy and sustainable homes. You’ll unpack what sustainability means for dwellings. Look into designing for health and climate. Exercise your creativity. Get to know sustainable products and building materials.

Fire has shaped the evolution of the world we see around us and is fundamental to life. Yet wildfire can also be devastating to human and ecological communities. Today, more and more of us are living in fire prone areas, and wildfires are behaving in new, less predictable ways.  So how do we live with fire - as individuals, and as communities? How do we plan for fire, and how do we respond when fires happen? How do we ensure that we are using fire in a sustainable way? What are the trade-offs involved in fire management? And what might we learn from indigenous Australians, who have used fire skilfully on this continent for over 40,000 years?  Living with Fire is for anyone interested in these complex but practical and fascinating questions about fire in our lives today. You will learn what causes fire and why wildfires behave the way they do. As well as the science of fire, you will learn about the human dimensions of fire and the complex trade-offs involved in fire management between the needs of culture and society, and ecology and biodiversity. You will learn how to evaluate your own level of fire risk and what you can do to plan for fire as an individual. You will also become more empowered to participate in conversations about how we plan for and respond to fire in our local communities.

This subject explores the interlinked scientific, technical, environmental, economic, social and political factors that have shaped society&#39;s energy usage and which will impact on future energy policy and decision making. Energy science, technology, usage and energy policy affect almost all facets of modern life. Energy is the single most traded commodity in the global economy, it is a significant factor that affects political decision making at global, national, state and local levels, and a major determinant of economic and social wellbeing. Ensuring future responsible, equitable, access to affordable energy for both developed and developing societies is one of the most significant challenges currently facing humanity. Critical and wide-ranging examination of this issue is a major focus of this subject. This subject will facilitate active and informed student participation in the ongoing debate regarding current and future global energy policy and alternatives. Students will learn about conventional, alternative and potential future energy sources and then set this knowledge in the context of important economic, environmental, social and political factors that affect energy policy.

Energy

This subject investigates the components of a healthy and sustainable food system (production to consumption) from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on the domains of health, environment, economy and society. Students will critically analyse the concept of the ‘Sustainable Diet’ and the changes needed to ensure that our food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable. Students will be exposed to the views of the food industry, food producers and public health experts on food sustainability and will reflect on the implication their own food choices and their impact on the environment. This subject combines case-study and experience-based learning and exposes students to current and emerging trends and issues, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills to improve our food system. The driving forces behind this subject is our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the challenge of an increasing world population combined with increasing food insecurity, the rise of nutrition-related chronic diseases and the bi-directional relationship environmental change and the changes needed to ensure that the food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable.
