Education Support is essential to educational access and equity, particularly for children and adults who may have distinct learning difficulties, lack confidence or motivation in learning, or who might otherwise be disengaged or marginalised from conventional educational systems or practices.The Undergraduate Certificate in Education Support provides a foundational understanding of educational practices for Teacher Aides, School Support Officers, and Home Schooling parents. You&#39;ll develop problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills relevant to many education careers, especially in a classroom setting as Integration Aides, Teacher Aides, and School Support Officers. Technology for Inclusion

This subject was previously known as ICT Across Curriculum.Studying this subject, you will develop key skills to apply Digital Literacy and Technologies across the curriculum and monitor progress. You will explore content and skills detailed in the National Program Standards for Initial Teacher Education ICT Priority Area, NSW Supplementary Documentation: Elaborations in Priority Areas, and NESA Report Digital Literacy Skills and Learning. You will also examine the Digital Technologies Curriculum and ICT General Capabilities, as prescribed by the Australian Curriculum. Analysing theories (SAMR and TPACK), you will learn to implement Digital Literacy and Technologies in education, using safe, ethical and socially responsible strategies. You will explore programming and computational thinking and investigate adaptive technology for improving learning outcomes. Working with your peers, you will hone your collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Digital Literacy and Technologies Across the Curriculum

Children may experience a range of learning difficulties that will interfere with learning. In this subject students explore strategies to identify and reduce the impact of learning challenges in early childhood contexts.

Learning Difficulties And Abilities

Educators are required to ensure that their classrooms are inclusive environments. Integrate your knowledge in this capstone subject which aims to strengthen your understanding of educational strategies that provide effective teaching for students with disabilities or learning difficulties. As part of this subject you will complete the mandatory special and inclusive education content required for teachers employed in public schools (in NSW). This subject includes 35 days of professional experience after which you will be able to demonstrate your ability to meet the Graduate Teacher Standards.

Inclusive Teaching: PrEx 35 days

There will be times throughout your teaching career that you will need to adjust your teaching strategies to encompass the needs of students in your classes who have learning difficulties or disabilities. In this subject you will develop the responsive teaching skills to address the impact of learning difficulties and disabilities on engagement and learning in the classroom. You will learn how to confidently and effectively teach and intervene for children with learning difficulties or disabilities. This subject includes 20 days of professional experience.

Educational Intervention for Students with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities: PrEx 20 days

Literacy underpins all learning for children. As a future teacher, it is important that you have a depth of understanding about the wide variability of literacy achievement and the factors that affect literacy achievement in the classroom. In this subject you will examine assessment techniques for determining learning needs in literacy by studying theory and practical learning activities. Teaching and intervention activities that accelerate literacy learning will also be explored. You will be drawing on your knowledge of evidence-based literacy techniques to plan, implement and evaluate intervention strategies for literacy learning. This subject requires you to have contact with children so you can complete the assessment tasks. Requirements for student teachers who have contact with children are the completion of online anaphylaxis training, the completion of an online child protection module and a valid Working With Children Check (WWC).

Intervention for Literacy Difficulties in the Classroom

Start your teaching career with an understanding of the strengths and challenges of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a professional, you will be in a position to enhance your students’ learning and support them and their families as they navigate the education system. In this subject you will engage in critical discussion about the theoretical explanations for ASD. You will focus on the development and learning of students with ASD, and study the evidence based teaching practices and interventions used for learners with ASD. You will investigate the collaborative practices that best support students diagnosed with ASD in special and inclusive settings, and in everyday living.

Autism: Evidence Based Intervention

As a teacher, you need to deliberately plan for teaching behaviours that support learning in your classroom.  This subject explores processes for providing multi-tiered systems of support for behaviour and gives you some insight into evidence-based strategies for students with disabilities, learning difficulties or giftedness in your classroom. There are times when more intense intervention is needed to reduce the significant challenging behaviours. This course will help you recognise, assess and respond to the needs of every student.  Learn how to articulate clear and appropriate learning goals for your classes and design positive behaviour plans for groups of students.This subject addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Positive Behavioural Support (Special and Inclusive Education)

Understanding the learning needs of children and adolescents as they develop is critical to your future as an educator of young people. In this subject you will explore the field of Developmental Psychology and analyse a range of theories which explore the different developmental frameworks and physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. You will learn about developmental differences and investigate teaching strategies to help you respond to these differences in the classroom. This subject teaches you how to use developmental assessment information to  better support student development and learning. You’ll also learn some strategies for reporting results to parents and carers.

Development and Learning in Childhood and Adolescence

In this subject you will be introduced to the concept of twice exceptionality; where a student is gifted and they are also living with a disability. The subject will investigate the many ways that twice exceptionality may manifest, such as: giftedness and specific learning disabilities, giftedness and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and giftedness and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There will be a focus on the way in which a student’s giftedness can mask their disability, and the way their disability can mask their giftedness. The paradoxical needs of the 2e student will be considered and strategies for supporting the 2e student will be presented. Reading research and empirical evidence will challenge some of the many myths and misunderstandings that surround this group of children.

Teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities requires additional professional skills. When you study this subject you will learn about the defining features of learning difficulties. This subject explores a range of physical impairments, neurological and/or psychological disorders, and developmental conditions that may be present in your students. You will be introduced to the common types, characteristics, names and terminology used in educational settings when managing students with one or more of these conditions. You will complete reflective exercises which will broaden your understanding of how children with special needs can be included in mainstream classes and investigate the resources which will empower you to be inclusive.
