The Master of Arts (Women&#39;s and Gender Studies) requires 2 years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course specialisation is offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.Offered both in-person and online, Flinders Women’s studies explores the importance of the concepts and constructs surrounding gender and society. Why so many think the way they do. We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food security (and insecurity) can drive conflict, propels human migration, and informs our relationship with land and environment. With an overarching global perspective, this subject explores food production and consumption, exploring its sociological, political, historical, economic, ethical, and scientific contexts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Food Security

Youth is often presented as a period of storm and stress or a time of crisis. On the other hand youth culture is often something many seek out, envy, and desire. This subject will acquaint students with Australian and international literature concerned with the study of youth. Youth Identities

This interdisciplinary subject enables better understanding of ourselves and of our relations to others in settler colonial Australia. We examine how gender identities are not simply separate from other identities; they are always situated in relation to other differences, such as race, class, sexuality or disability. Beginning with ways sex and race interact in the nation, the subject asks how people develop diverse forms of belonging within systems of social power, governance, fields of knowledge and public debates. We question taken for granted assumptions about identity formation so that differences can be better negotiated in professional and institutional contexts. Materials include readings, film clips, historical texts, personal stories, statistics, and advertisements. The subject entails a deep appreciation of how choices we make affect the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems in which sex, gender and diversity becomes significant now and in the future. In doing so, we aim to promote social justice.

This subject was previously known as Imagining Health in Social and Cultural Contexts.An introduction to sociological and anthropological perspectives on health, wellbeing illness and disability in society; understanding the contribution of the biomedical and social models of health for transdisciplinary practice for nurses and allied health: professionals. Incorporating contemporary, historical, social and cultural perspectives in local and global contexts to identify social determinants of health. Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. Students will investigate key texts in literature, film and theory to explore the distribution of political and economic power in the specific places in the world throughout history. This subject aims to introduce students to the richness of sociology by stimulating their curiosity about the relationship between the individual, society and the globe using sociological thinking. This subject will introduce students to the history of sociology and some of the thinkers who have influenced the discipline. Sport, games, and play are a part of everyday life. Formal or informal, solitary or shared, physical or virtual, realistic or fantastical, organised or spontaneous, games are a means of escaping the ‘real’ world or exploring it in new ways. Our shared values can be demonstrated through play, either by celebrating those we deem to be ‘good sports’ or shaming those who don’t play ‘in the spirit of the game’. But how are these norms of ‘fair play’ shaped, by whom, and how can they change over time? How can urban sports such as skateboarding and parkour be seen as ‘subversive’ and framed as a public menace, and yet offer opportunities for personal expression and communal belonging? How are video games shaping new understandings of both fun and competitive interactions, and how are e-sports influencing the future of play?Meanwhile, more ‘traditional’ forms of sport are undoubtedly among the most influential in Australian society. No less than three Australian Test cricket captains and tennis players have been recognised as Australian of the Year. Prime Ministers and other political leaders desperately promote their team affiliations to make themselves relatable, and Victoria has not one, but two public holidays dedicated solely to sporting events. But why is this the case? Why does sport seem to possess such an enormous influence in Australian society? Sport can unite us and foster community-building, but it can also divide us through forms of exclusion based on race, gender, sexuality, faith, age, and class. In short, sport may claim to be ‘fair’ while in reality proving ‘foul’. In this subject, we address debates around sports and games and explore how forms of play can create welcoming social spaces.This is an online, entirely asynchronous subject, meaning there are no live lectures or tutorials. Instead students can work through the content on their own schedules (while, of course, keeping in mind the assessment deadlines).

The Politics of Play: Contemporary Issues in Sports, Games, and Leisure

This subject will explore the influence of culture on both individuals and communities. You will develop the skills to analyse cultural impacts on thoughts, emotions, and behavioural processes though lectures on cultural psychology and tutorial exercises. This subject will also explore how to build culturally diverse yet cohesive communities by creatively applying the knowledge of cultural psychology, social psychology, and community psychology. Tutorial exercises will provide you with opportunities to explore how to put the basic knowledge into practice when considering issues concerning cultural diversity in communities. Global Citizenship entails deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world being able to recognise the global context of concepts, act across cultures and boundaries, and work with diverse communities - now and in the future. This subject consists of timetabled lectures and tutorial classes. It is typically taken by students in their second or third year.

Psychology Of Culture, Communities And Global Citizenship

In this subject, you will reflect on how society and culture shapes language use and communication between individuals and between groups. Drawing on a range of ideas from the fields of intercultural communication, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, students develop tools, knowledge and awareness to assist them in understanding and positively engaging with the linguistic and cultural diversity around them.
