This degree is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this degree will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most subjects in this degree will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks.The Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Secondary schools in Years 7 - 12. Students in this degree will specialise in either one or two Secondary school curriculum areas, depending on their previous study, and will be qualified to teach in those subject areas of the Secondary curriculum. This degree is not suitable for qualified Secondary teachers wishing to change their subject specialisation.Curriculum areas offered in the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) are:<ul><li>English;</li><li>The Arts (specialisations in Visual Arts, Drama, Media Production &amp; Analysis);</li><li>Mathematics;</li><li>Science (specialisations in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology, Psychology, Earth &amp; Environmental Science);</li><li>Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) (specialisations in Economics, Geography, History, Politics &amp; Law); or</li><li>Health and Physical Education.</li></ul>Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. This subject was previously known as EDC151 Child Development for Educators.Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical human development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on maximizing developmental outcomes from birth through young adulthood. In addition to emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and maintaining safe school and care environments for children and adolescents. Gain an overview of human development from conception to early adolescence. Interpret aspects of development related to age—exploring how the interactions between the child, caregivers, home and school impact children's development.

This subject introduces students to the course and the expectations of them as they develop into successful university students and future educators.
Students will explore theories of learning and position themselves as learners. This includes undertaking a language competency assessment and exploring the concept of academic integrity with its attendant expectations for research, written communication and oral presentation in academic and professional contexts.
Within the broad concept of education, the development of teacher identity will be informed by an examination of one’s own ethical and socio-cultural values with consideration of educators’ planetary citizenship; cultural diversity and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; along with an educator’s ethical and legislated professional responsibilities, including completion of necessary clearances. It also includes an exploration of personal resilience as an educator.
A key component of the subject will be establishing the Digital Professional Portfolio in which students critically reflect and gather evidence of their capabilities against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Teacher Standards) throughout the duration of the course.

This subject provides an overview of technology enhanced resources commonly used to support teaching and learning. Fundamental skills, attitudes, and approaches that educators require to make effective personal and professional use of such resources in varied educational contexts will be addressed. A key focus will be effective integration of technology to enhance learning, teaching and management processes. Approaches for working in technology-rich educational contexts by which possible harm to one’s self and to others may be minimised through systematic assessment of risk, adoption of safe practices, and ethical behaviour will be explored.

This subject was previously known as EDC171 Teachers Inquiring about the World.This subject provides an introduction to systematic processes of inquiry which lay the foundation for meaningful interpretation and implementation of curriculum. Students will learn the principles of inquiry and be introduced to inquiry methodologies as well as discipline specific inquiry approaches for Science and HASS. A cross-curriculum priority will be chosen as the thematic focus for the subject. This will assist students when they are selecting a global and local issue as the topic of their inquiry project. This subject was previously known as EDC161 Performing Arts for Educators.
This is the first of two Arts Education subjects. It introduces The Arts Learning Area subjects of Dance, Drama and Music and positions The Arts in a cultural context. The value and role of The Arts in children’s developmental growth and education is elucidated. The centrality of inquiry-based and praxis-led learning in dance, drama and music, that emphasizes creative thinking, self-expression, meaning-making and communicating ideas, is explored. Performing-arts praxis, reflection and appreciation activities provide experiential learning opportunities designed to promote personal confidence, arts literacy and presentation and communication skills in the performing arts – and for teaching. Within a lifelong learning framework, direct experience and personal investment in arts learning is intended to develop content knowledge.

This is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects that includes a practical component (a 15 day placement in a school). The subject will extend your application of relevant philosophies and theories related to teaching to deepen and extend the implementation of effective planning for diverse groups of learners. The subject will continue to address professional responsibilities, effective communication and reflective practices to support learning in school based context. The professional experience practical assessment is a 15 day work place learning opportunity intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained, along with providing students with insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. Secondary Professional Experience 2

This subject is designed to build upon the foundation of Child Development for Educators. The subject will specifically focus on adolescents with regard to their physical, intellectual, social and emotional development and will address factors that influence learning in the secondary school context. The subject will address contemporary theoretical and evidence based perspectives of inclusion to account for cultural, linguistic, neurological, physical, behavioural, gender, sexual and First Nation diversity. Educating Adolescents: Diversity, Differentiation and Inclusion

This subject is the first in a sequence of four professional teaching practice focused subjects. The subject will support your understanding and application of key education theories, concepts and skills to develop your professional teaching practice. The first module will introduce evidence-based learning design for secondary teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners. The second module will introduce the theory and application of positive classroom management and the third module will address professional conduct behaviours and effective communication strategies for teachers. This subject is designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation of essential skills you will need to demonstrate on a school-based professional experience placement. This subject is designed to introduce you to the learning, thinking and communication processes you need in order to succeed in your studies as an education undergraduate at Curtin University. The subject will develop skills in research, thinking critically and reflecting on your personal levels of literacy and numeracy competencies in preparation for the LANTITE.
