This program provides an introduction to the concepts and techniques used to explore the solar system, which forms the basis of the space industry. The space industry covers many sectors including engineering, manufacturing, science, remote operations, mining, health, etc. It assumes no prior knowledge of the space environments, and is well suited for those who are employed by or interact with industries, such as resources, finance, science, etc…, who wish to gain a better understanding of the history and reach of the space industry.Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

Graduate Certificate in Space Environment

This course is a relaunch of the Master of Sustainability and Climate Policy. It develops knowledge, understanding and appreciation of what it means to live within nature and our planetary boundaries. In a sense, it goes beyond sustainability and has developed out of the recent extinction rebellion and climate strike movements. The resultant Environment and Climate Emergency is increasingly accepted as policy by national, state and local governmental authorities worldwide. The course aligns with Curtin’s strategy of demand-driven research introducing a strong emphasis on research in a master by coursework to address a rapidly diversifying economy reflecting on a competitive job market and changes in students’ interests. To that purpose, the teaching and learning approach seeks to expose students to real-world practice and challenges while favouring familiarisation with industry and local governments’ expectations when hiring graduates. The course will graduate global citizens to affect change.

Study urban design, sustainable cities, leadership, Aboriginal sustainability, decarbonising cities and regions, climate policy and economics. Graduates find careers in sectors where social research and analytical skills in sustainability are required.

This subject provides students with a high-level understanding of space systems design and develops skills required to design successful space missions. The subject focusses on mission architecture and design but also covers fundamental space systems design including spacecraft design, orbital dynamics, communications, and a brief overview of space project management. Unpack how space missions are planned, resourced, and carried out. From ground, to launch, and space, this subject is an introduction to the major elements of space missions. Practice project management in space with a mission planning exercise.

Space Mission Design

This subject explores and explains the challenges of operating in space, from the environment of different space bodies to the stresses and difficulties this causes. It also provides an overview of the needs and requirements for, along with the details of, setting up habitats and resource collection. The learning outcomes involve basic understanding of ‘living off the land’ in the sense of utilising resources in-situ as well as using geological landscape and surface materials for building a human base and habitats. This subject will explore past, current and future programs to return humans to the Moon. From the dangers of radiation to the importance of setting up base, you’ll explore the realities of humans surviving in space. Think about visiting the Moon and Mars—their surfaces, resources, and landscapes. Work in teams to design a base.

Operating in Space

Space weather in the Solar System includes the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field found in solar wind plasma. This subject will define these phenomena, describe the origin in the context of the Sun and consider the array of destructive effects they cause on spacecraft, instrumentation and/or planetary bodies. The subject will cover solar flares, coronal mass ejections, the solar wind, and the plasma that makes up the solar wind. Explore weather events in space and how they can disrupt technology and celestial objects. You’ll use your background in STEM to unpack solar winds and radiation. Topics include CMEs and solar flares. Think about ways to minimise space weather impacts.

Space Environment

This subject will track the origin and evolution of the space industry from the point of view of exploration of the solar system. We will focus on the multi-disciplinary investigation of all Solar System bodies, from the Sun to the Oort cloud and beyond. We will cover the history of space exploration from ancient to modern times, using ground and space-based methods, including instrument payload and science objectives. The subject will also detail the spin-offs from space-related engineering and science that have benefitted humanity and the economy through this pathway.
