The Graduate Diploma in Spiritual Direction is coursework degree for those who are interested in becoming a spiritual director, but do not have formal background in theology. You will develop knowledge, understanding and the foundational skills suited to the ethical, self-aware and safe practice of spiritual direction in the Ignatian tradition, normally in Christian contexts.In the present day, when the choice to belong to institutional religious traditions is perhaps more complex than previously, the role of Spiritual Directors assumes a new importance as people seek to find meaning and purpose. Spiritual directors must be experienced persons of prayer, humility and integrity, able to listen to, be with, and guide others as they seek to deepen their relationship with God.Drawing from the Ignatian spiritual tradition, the Graduate Diploma in Spiritual Direction aims to provide you with the theological, spiritual, psychological and ethical frameworks, as well as practical skills necessary to undertake spiritual direction as a ministry.

Since ancient times, magic and religion have shared a common belief in the supernatural and other-worldly encounters; yet their histories tell a story of acrimony and dissent.This unit investigates how magic and the supernatural have been accepted, understood and practised in a range of historical and social contexts.You will explore such themes as natural, ritual and demonic magic, necromancy, spirits, mediums and séances, fictional wizards and enchantment.Underpinning the study will be an examination of the nature and use of magic and its relation to religion, religious ideologies, science and entertainment.

Magic and the Supernatural in History and Culture

This subject explores the nature of the person of Jesus and his core gospel teachings as understood within the Catholic Church tradition. Participants are to understand Jesus’ mission to proclaim the ‘good news’ of the kingdom of God and how this news is applied through the Perth Archdiocesan Religious Education Units of Work to the life experience of students within Catholic school settings. The course provides opportunities for participants to reflect critically on the personal and professional readiness of staff to be supportive of or teach Jesus’ gospel message in Catholic schools.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Sanskrit, the classical language of India, has long been renowned for its beauty, subtlety and complexity. It is the key to the civilizational treasures of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, and provides direct access to a vast repository of literary, scientific and philosophical wisdom. At the ANU we seek to balance the traditional practice of textual reception—reading and grammar—with language production—speaking, chanting and singing—to provide a truly balanced curriculum. In this beginner subject, students will be introduced to the grammar of classical Sanskrit, learn to read easy classical texts and engage in the Living Tradition of Sanskrit conversation, chanting and singing.

Exploring the Sacred

Around the world, communities of worshippers follow a set of beliefs in their religious practices and ethical rules. Religious traditions that have evolved in different places have all developed their own set of beliefs and customs that regulate their lives. The focus of this subject is a comparative study of the five major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. You will study the foundations and development of each of these religions, with an emphasis on comparing their beliefs and practices in the contemporary world. In doing so, you will gain a deeper knowledge of the nature and variety of world religions and develop your ability to understand others.

World Religions Today

This subject provides leaders in education, health, and the social sectors with strategies to effectively lead and manage organisational transformation. The subject explores theory and strategy of leadership within change management, underpinned by the principles of Catholic social teaching, with particular emphasis on human dignity and the common good.

Leading Change in a Catholic Context

This subject provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary business leadership and management theory and practice in the context of Catholic leadership. It examines skills and competencies required of contemporary business leaders including influence, communication, team leadership, and strategic leadership. It also examines application and assessment of these skills and competencies in a Catholic institutional setting.

Leadership & Management in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

This subject provides an in-depth exploration of the Church&#39;s evangelising mission. It provides students (who may be leaders or aspiring leaders) in Catholic institutions with in-depth knowledge of Catholic Mission and Identity in order to better equip them to serve in Catholic Institutions.

Catholic Mission & Identity

Since at least the middle of the nineteenth century philosophers and social scientists have predicted that religion would vanish as capitalism, science and state separation from religion progressed. To some extent this has happened in the West, but the picture is more complicated than the secularisation theory predicted. Not only is religion still with us, in many regions of the world it has grown, and its impact has become more intense. This unit examines the nature of the relationship between religion and politics by analysing the history of political thought and institutions, as well as recent developments in global and national politics. The first half of the unit covers key aspects of the history of church/state relations in the West and the rise of the secular state. The second half covers contemporary issues including the debates over religious freedom, the rise of fundamentalist movements, and the processes by which many modern, apparently secular ideas and movements often taken on sacred or quasi-religious forms. Through an examination of both classic and contemporary writings students will gain a deep understanding of the complex, contested relations between religion and politics.

This subject was previously known as Creed and Sacraments in Catholic Studies.This subject explores the signs, symbols and rituals of key sacred liturgies within the Catholic tradition and their scriptural and historical origins. Participants are to understand the significance of the sacraments and liturgies to Christian life, especially the celebration of the Mass and how this is applied through the Perth Archdiocesan Religious Education Units of Work to the life experience of students within Catholic school settings. The subject provides opportunities for participants to reflect critically on the personal and professional readiness of staff to be supportive of or teach sacraments and liturgies in Catholic schools.This subject is offered for students considering teaching in Catholic schools in WA. The subject meets the accreditation requirements of the Catholic Education WA [CEWA]. In particular, this subject is one of three ‘Catholic education’ subjects offered at undergraduate level through Curtin University that meets the tertiary-study component for ‘Accreditation to Teach’ and ‘Accreditation to Teach Religious Education’ in Catholic schools in WA. The delivery of the subjects is by staff of The Catholic Institute of Western Australia, a recognised tertiary and educational body established by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Western Australia. Students studying or looking for employment in Catholic Schools outside of WA should check with their local Catholic Education Office to see if the subject fulfils the requirements for their Accreditation.
