Introduction to Quality Health Services

This course is aimed at developing your understanding of the responsibilities that all aged care staff have in ensuring high-quality care. By the end of this course, you will have a solid understanding of quality and safety in aged care, know how to monitor and mitigate potential risks, and be well-placed to seek employment in the aged care industry. UniSA Online’s 10-week short courses give you the flexibility to upskill in a certain area, stay current with developments in your field, diversify your knowledge, or even explore a new direction in your career – without having to commit to the time and cost of a full university degree.  Delivered 100% online, you’ll be able to study where and when it suits you. Access online academic and student support seven days a week, fit study around work and life commitments, view learning resources 24/7, and log in to the interactive online environment anywhere, any time and on any device. This is a first-year course from UniSA Online’s Aged Care degree. Please note: you are responsible for completing any relevant prerequisite courses before enrolling in this course.Should your course have an exam it will be scheduled for Australian Central Standard Time or Australian Central Daylight Time, depending on the time of the year.

This is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in an Early Learning Centre). This subject will require the practical application of curriculum and early childhood pedagogy appropriate to young children in early learning centres. Planning and implementing high quality learning experiences and supportive environments to maximise learning opportunities for infants, toddlers and young children will be a feature of this subject. The theoretical component includes roles and responsibilities, planning and programming learning environments, health and safety, fostering cognitive, language, emotional and social development, as well as observing and documenting learning. The subject will examine national and state laws and policy and the impact these have on early learning environments, families and children. Students will be provided with an opportunity to develop a leadership style through engaging with the organisational culture and professional learning community while attending a practicum in an accredited Early Learning Centre working with babies, toddlers and young children. The placement will comprise of a 1 day visit for 5 weeks aligned to five theory topics immediately followed by a block of 15 consecutive days. Students will aim to build collaborative partnerships with families and colleagues during the placement. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Early Childhood Professional Experience 2: Quality Frameworks in Early Learning Centres

This subject of study will enable the student to consolidate understanding and application of the methods and instruments that form the foundation for monitoring quality and safety of healthcare delivery ensuring optimal outcomes. Students will analyse the leadership and organisational factors integral to the development of a strong clinical governance framework. Knowledge gained in this course will equip students to strengthen clinical governance frameworks and patient safety processes in many and varied health services and settings. Deep exploration of clinical governance undertaken in this course will empower students to ensure that quality healthcare standards are maintained and to become agents of change for the benefit of patients, colleagues and healthcare systems.

Clinical Governance

Quality management focuses on the quality of physical products as well as services and processes, and how they can be improved. The principles and processes of quality management are the key elements that businesses use to respond to market and customers’ needs and maintain business viability through improved efficiency, product quality and safety, and improvement of service delivery.Quality management is comprised of the four key components of quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement. You will explore these four components and how they impact on issues such as customer focus, customer value, continuous improvement, process improvement and total quality management.This subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:-discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences-concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others-the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice-the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.

This subject will introduce you to the quality, safety and regulatory systems that govern service delivery, reporting and accreditation. Principles, policies, standards and guidelines will be considered in the context of the individual, the consumer and the organisation. A cycle of continuous quality improvement involving planning, implementation, evaluation and adaptation will be emphasised, including the central role of consumers in these processes. You will also explore the importance of organisational vision and values and individual role responsibility and accountability in the achievement of quality and safety outcomes.

Students completing this subject will have acquired knowledge of existing health service models, the internal and external factors that influence the delivery of quality services, and the best-practice models for quality service design.

The organisational resilience and communication fields of knowledge provide frameworks to review clinical governance arrangements. Additionally, quality improvement theory, techniques and approaches are addressed to equip professionals with the practical skills to enhance safe, high-quality care. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Communicating for Safety and Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Blood Safety Management Standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Communicating Safety and Quality in Healthcare

The implementation science and organisational reliability fields of knowledge are drawn upon to illuminate safety and quality centrality to clinical governance. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems that support and promote clinical safety and quality, accountability and transparency within organisations for healthcare users, the workforce and community.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Preventing and Controlling Infections and Medication Safety standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Integrating Governance Systems and Structures into Safety and Quality in Healthcare

This subject is designed to foster knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of continuous improvement in a range of healthcare settings. Participants will develop an understanding of creative, effective and practical approaches to implementing quality and safety practices in the workplace. As well, evidence–based leadership and change management strategies in the workplace will be explored.

In this subject students will trace the historical and political development of quality and safety in health care. Students will analyse key components of effective quality and safety programs, risk management and clinical governance and the impact of organisation related factors. Influences on quality and safety related to leadership and management in health care systems will be explored. Utilising a practical approach tools, techniques and methods will be identified to measure and improve quality and safety. The subject will examine the role of human factors in human error and determine what impact this has on safety and quality in health care organisations. Students will gain an understanding of the role of consumers’ contribution to quality and safety outcomes.
