This subject was previously known as EDC151 Child Development for Educators.Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical human development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on maximizing developmental outcomes from birth through young adulthood. In addition to emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and maintaining safe school and care environments for children and adolescents. This subject provides an introduction to health psychology in the Australian context. You will learn about how psychological theory can be applied to understanding health enhancing behaviours and health risk behaviours. Delve into the connections between people’s minds and bodies to better understand wellbeing. You’ll explore both the positive and risky behaviours that can influence people’s health. Touch on the connection between stress and illness. 

Although associations between crime and mental illness have a long history, the relationship is complex and contentious. Problem areas include media representations and social constructions of violent offenders, methodological and conceptual inconsistencies, and limited appreciation of the heterogeneity of mental health issues. This subject of study aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the evidence concerning the crime-mental health relationship. Factors other than mental illness that may be associated with violence and general criminality are explored, as are ethical challenges relating to this area. Particular mental disorders most often linked with criminality are examined and the relevant evidence is evaluated. Based on the content of this subject of study, students will demonstrate knowledge of ethical challenges and provide recommendations for best practice for both empirical research and policy.

Introduces the scientist-practitioner model for psychology. Explores the historical origins of psychology, the scientific mindset and the role of ethics in psychological research and practice. Examines the manner in which theory, research and practice are mutually informed. An introduction to scientific ways of thinking about human behaviour. You’ll explore the origins of psychological science and how they’ve evolved into today’s psychology practices. Think about ethics. Adopt a scientific perspective.

Science and Professional Practice in Psychology

This subject considers the psychology surrounding leadership: by addressing what constitutes effective leadership and how leadership skills might be improved. It differs from standard business courses in leadership, of which there are, of course, many. In this unit we focus specifically on psychological processes (what is that is clear and distinct in the psychological make up of a &#39;leader&#39; for example). The Unit is split into 8 modules and each of these has a separate and discreet topic. Whilst there are core readings for each module which you must read you are also strongly advised to review the additional reading as a way of enhancing your learning for this unit. Each of the eight sections introduces a key reading in the area of concern, and the introductory text and key reading complement one another in forming the core teaching materials.
