Modern software development is a multi-billion dollar industry, where problem-solving skills and solid understanding of programming techniques and practices are vital for producing high quality software. Building core knowledge for the study of computer science, this subject introduces you to techniques for computer program development. You will gain experience using a high-level programming language, and UNIX-type operating systems for developing and debugging computer programs. Honing skills for structured problem solving, you will develop and implement algorithms that break complex problems down into their component tasks and procedures. You will also explore the social implications, ethics and professional practice for IT. Your learning is reinforced throughout with practical exercises that challenge you with interesting problems. Topics include control structures, data types, algorithm design and analysis, basic hardware components and a user view of operating systems.

This subject introduces fundamental programming skills, developing students&#39; ability to think algorithmically to solve problems and to express their ideas in well-constructed Python code. Beginning with the fundamental characteristics of computers and how they represent information, the subject develops the concepts of data types, variables, expressions (calculations), statements (actions), and text-based input and output. Building on these low-level constructs, the subject examines ways to manage program complexity with control structures (for making decisions), functions and their parameters, built-in and custom data structures, and higher-level organisational mechanisms such as modules. Students will have the opportunity to explore advanced topics such as error handling and recursion.

This subject is designed to provide you with hands on practical experience developing software in a project environment. You work in teams and will complete projects from inception to implementation.
This subject includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.
As the project teams and projects will be assigned during the first week all enrolled students are advised to engage with the subject from the beginning of week 1.
Please note: This subject is considered to be a capstone subject for the Bachelor of Information Technology degree in which students demonstrate their competency in a (simulated) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) environment.
All students seeking the Bachelor of Information Technology award will need to complete this subject.

The Object-Oriented (OO) paradigm is a significant influence in software development in the computer industry. It divides a system into objects that exist in the model of the application domain. In this subject, students will be introduced to OO concepts, terminologies, syntax and programming using Java. Topics covered include classes and objects, inheritance, object attributes and methods, overloaded methods, the use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML) for representing these concepts, primitive data types, flow of control, basic input/output, arrays, Java library class, and exception handling. Some software engineering principles are included: program design, algorithm for solving a problem and version control. This subject is designed as inclusive as possible for undergraduate/diploma students.

Introduction to Scientific Programming

The internet has changed the way people interact with, and think about, computers. From online news to social networking sites, the diversity of ways that we utilise the internet is extensive; yet how many people understand how this technology works and how to create a web page?  This subject introduces you to the fundamentals and modern concepts of web development, equipping you with skills that are increasingly valuable as the internet becomes further embedded in our lives.  You will learn how web servers and clients communicate using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). You will also explore the formal languages used for web site development: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to generate the structure of web pages, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to apply stylistic features that enhance web page presentation, and Javascript and jQuery to provide dynamic user interactions.  Techniques such as server-side scripting (PHP) with session management are also discussed.
