Introduction to Scientific Programming

The internet has changed the way people interact with, and think about, computers. From online news to social networking sites, the diversity of ways that we utilise the internet is extensive; yet how many people understand how this technology works and how to create a web page?  This subject introduces you to the fundamentals and modern concepts of web development, equipping you with skills that are increasingly valuable as the internet becomes further embedded in our lives.  You will learn how web servers and clients communicate using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). You will also explore the formal languages used for web site development: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to generate the structure of web pages, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to apply stylistic features that enhance web page presentation, and Javascript and jQuery to provide dynamic user interactions.  Techniques such as server-side scripting (PHP) with session management are also discussed.

Web Programming

A programming language gives us a way of modelling and expressing a computer program. As programs tackle more complex tasks using big, fast, and distributed flows of data, the need for more powerful ways to think about and express our programs will only increase.  This subject introduces you to the paradigms (the particular styles or features) behind advanced programming languages used by many of the world’s leading software companies.  Taught predominantly using Scala, a mixed-paradigm language that will familiarise you with many concepts, the subject helps you to develop knowledge and technical skills with broad practical applications.  You will learn about functional programming, different type systems, and techniques for asynchronous, streaming and reactive programming. These techniques are useful across a wide spectrum – from making small problems simple, to modern event-based web systems, to “fast data” systems that process large flows of asynchronous data.

Functional and Reactive Programming

Object-oriented programming is one of the most widely used programming paradigms. It is based around the concept of modularisation of code, using &#39;classes&#39; and their instances, known also as &#39;objects&#39; and their interactions. Objects contain both data, called attributes, and behaviours, represented by methods. This subject introduces you to object-oriented design and analysis using Java, an object-oriented programing language. You will gain invaluable experience building functional, robust, and flexible computer programs, and learn the importance of building reusable and extendable code. This unit will cover topics including classes and objects, encapsulation, decoupling and delegation, inheritance, polymorphism, interfaces and abstraction. You will experience the design process, iteratively revising your code, improving it as you learn new concepts. The subject culminates in the development of a simple graphical user interface. With skills in object-oriented programming, you will be industry-ready and equipped to generate clean and efficient code with practical applications.

Having high-level quantitative skills and the ability to keep pace with new developments in programming can help you to stand out in your career.  This subject introduces you to fundamental programming concepts, including conditional branching, looping and recursion, and you will learn to program in a high-level programming language.  Studying the algorithms used for common tasks in numerical analysis, you will explore solving linear equations, interpolation, root finding, curve fitting, numerical integration, random numbers and Monte Carlo methods, and numerical solutions to ordinary differential equations.  Throughout the subject, hands-on quantitative problems relevant to the sciences and engineering will allow you to hone your problem-solving skills.
