This degree is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this degree will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most subjects in this degree will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks.The Master of Teaching (Primary Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Years 1 - 6 in Primary Schools, and will provide a foundation for teaching across the primary curriculum. Students entering this degree will hold a degree in a discipline that contains content relevant to the Australian Curriculum in the primary years. Students will complete professional experience placements in a range of schools and across a range of year levels and will benefit from the School of Educations’ specialisation in STEM subjects.Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. As this course doesn’t hold CRICOS registration international students on a Student VISA are not permitted to undertake this course.

This subject examines the social, political, cultural, historical and economic shape of Australian society and the impact of these forces on education policy, classroom practices and student learning. Pre-service teachers examine the characteristics of education systems and learning settings that promote inclusivity, celebrate diversity and reduce the effects of disadvantage and inequality. Schooling and Australian Society

Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Major theories relating to how learning occurs are examined and appraised. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on optimising developmental and learning outcomes to support the full participation of a diverse range of learners. In addition to its emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and communities. Gain a broad overview of typical and atypical development from birth to adolescence. Explore the physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains via the behaviourism, humanism, cognitivism and constructivism theoretical perspectives.

Theories of Development and Learning

This is the first in the suite of three English subjects in the Master of Teaching. The focus of this subject is on an in-depth understanding of what reading entails and the characteristics of the good reader. Theories and practices of reading will be situated in the context of broader perspectives of literacy and language. Students will learn and understand the multiple components of reading to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers at various stages of their development. Introduction to English: Reading

This subject was previously known as Quantitative Mathematics for Science Inquiry.This subject will focus on methods of data collection, analysis and presentation, traversing curriculum areas which include mathematics and science. Statistics for Educators

This subject focuses on creating and maintaining supportive, inclusive and welcoming learning environments. It explores positive and effective strategies for helping children manage their own behaviour, including ways in which the physical environment can be optimised for children’s learning, wellbeing and safety. Strategies for building and maintaining relationships with and between children will be explored. Developing Positive Learning Environments

This subject will examine the role of creative technologies in effective teaching and learning. Students will formulate their own plans for the use of creative technologies that support a diversity of learners in a safe, responsible and ethical manner. Creative Technologies

The focus of this subject is on understanding about diversity within the context of a school environment. The subject will encompass literature and theory about student diversity and support and relate this knowledge to the learning environments for students with diverse abilities, and cultural and social diversity. The subject includes differentiated teaching strategies to cater for a diversity of learners and to maximise outcomes. Pedagogies for Diversity

This is the third in the suite of three English subjects in the Master of Teaching (Primary Education). The focus of this unit is to critique and analyse the key paradigms and pedagogies of the English learning area as they apply to different teaching contexts. Extending English in the Primary Years

This subject prepares pre-service teachers to teach the Arts in Primary schools through the five Arts subjects: Dance, Drama, Media arts, Music and Visual arts. It explores authentic Arts education practices and inquiry-based learning approaches. Learn how to design and teach arts activities that reflect arts learning principles. Examine the features of safe and ethical learning environments, create enquiry-based lessons and evaluate arts teaching and learning using an improvement framework.

Teaching Arts in the Primary Years

This is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). This subject focuses on assessing, providing feedback and reporting on student learning. It encompasses the principles and purpose of effective assessment through the analysis and critique of different learning theories. The professional experience practical assessment is a three week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained along with providing further insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met.
