Do you want to increase your understanding about the music you listen to? Music is alluring, compelling, moving and significant in everyday life. This is an opportunity for you to learn the basics of melody, harmony and rhythm, and apply this musical knowledge through listening and discussion. This subject is for beginners, those with little or no knowledge of music and no prior formal music training. When studying this subject you will be introduced to the fundamentals of musical styles, genres and the theoretical skills required for notating and reading music, and enhancing listening skills. You will also explore broader topics in past and present music, including its role and context in society.

Your introduction to musical styles, genres and theory. Whether you've studied music before or are new to it completely, you'll learn how to notate and read music and more. 

Practical interventions employing arts-based activities, including music, theatre, dance and visual arts, are increasingly being employed nationally and internationally to improve mood and well-being, physical activity and cognitive processing for people with dementia. Arts-based programs have also been shown to have some capacity to enhance communication of emotions and relationships with carers. This subject will explore the evidence-based research on the benefits that can be conferred through the stimulation of sensory perception, reminiscence and subconscious movement using music, theatre, dance and visual arts. These will be dealt with in three separate modules. Students will develop knowledge of model interventions employing music, theatre, dance and visual arts, and each module will also provide an introduction to key elements of successful program design and the range of activities that can be employed.

Explore how music, dance, and theatre can improve the lives of people with dementia. You’ll review case studies and research for examples of creative activities. Think about your own arts program and how you can influence patients’ wellbeing.

The aim of this subject is to apply critical perspectives to popular music as a key form of cultural production, consumption and leisure in contemporary everyday life. In doing so the unit will apply a range of sociological concepts and theories ranging from Marxism and cultural Marxism through to more recent post-structuralist approaches including postmodernism, reflexive modernity and risk. The unit will also draw on approaches applied to the study of popular music in corresponding disciplines such as cultural studies and media studies.

Explore how popular music has become an essential part of culture and everyday life. You’ll use sociological theories like postmodernism to understand its significance. Study popular music in depth. Get critical about the impact of music on society.

This subject helps prepare you for a future as a professional musician. You will do an in depth study of the creative and technical principles employed in contemporary music recording and production studios. You will gain an understanding of recording studio technologies including mixers, compressors, equalisers, microphones and monitors using industry-standard digital software tools. You will learn how to record instruments and vocals and gain a practical and conceptual understanding of recording and mixing processes through a variety of applied and analytical exercises. Sound recording and production techniques of specific artists, audio engineers, and music producers will be critically analysed and deconstructed into their component techniques. You will also progress through a series of critical listening exercises which train and test your ability to interpret sound events including: compression, equalisation, distortion and time-based effects.

Creative Music Production

Learning to lead and conduct an ensemble involves organisation, great communication and decision making skills, and leadership; all skills which will serve you well in your future career. Studying this subject you will develop ensemble leadership skills and conducting techniques. You will learn the theory and practice of choral and instrumental conducting as it is applied in a variety of musical contexts. You will learn to identify, assess and apply knowledge of musical communication to scenarios where musicians are required to lead an ensemble including bands, choirs, and soloists. You will investigate rehearsal preparation strategies, ensemble setup, warm-up activities and ensemble development skills. School-age development skills will also be included in this subject for teachers in training.

Ensemble Leadership

Musical performance increasingly integrates visual media and sonic technologies to engage audiences, manipulate senses and enhance the live performance experience. Studying this subject you will learn how to evaluate and criticise the role of the visual in music performance. You will look at current trends and directions in the use of media technologies and learn how to incorporate some of these key technologies into live musical performance projects. This subject includes a multimedia performance project for a live or web-based audience. You will learn to evaluate musical amplification requirements in different performance settings, practise live sonic processing techniques and understand the function of visual media projection technologies within different performance environments. You will also analyse a variety of live multimedia performances including popular and classical music concerts, V Jing performances, sonic arts installations, and interactive performance art.

Music Performance: Production, Media and Innovation

To produce contemporary electronic music for an increasingly astute cohort of music consumers, artists need to develop an understanding of a range of creative techniques and approaches as well as a fluency with current technologies. This subject provides you with an overview of the principles employed in contemporary electronic music production. You will learn how to produce beats, bass lines, melody and harmony parts for dance and hip hop music production, and popular music songwriting using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology. You will gain a practical and conceptual understanding of MIDI technology through a variety of applied and analytical exercises. You will also explore sound production and processing techniques used in contemporary electronic music production and gain an understanding of the use of synthesisers and sample based virtual instruments. Production techniques of specific artists/music producers will be analysed and deconstructed.

Electronic Music Production

The professional life of a musician frequently involves collaboration whether it be with other musicians or with other art forms such as theatre, film, dance or visual art forms. This subject trains you to develop a professional standard of creative practice through a student-designed, research-informed collaborative project (proposal must be approved by the Subject Coordinator). It builds on the Foundations of Creative Practice through the increased scale and professional level and quality of the projects undertaken. You will specialise in either music performance, composition or music production/technology and be provided with structured learning materials to support the development of your project. You will participate in group mentoring, evaluation and project management activities. Learning materials will encourage creative development and expose you to a range of creative practices and research methodologies used to develop creative work in academic and professional contexts.

Collaborative Music Creation

This subject explores the development of European music, c.1750-c.1914. You will examine Western musical forms within their aesthetic, cultural and technological contexts. You will progress through listening and analysis of European orchestral and vocal genres including the sonata, the symphony, the concerto, opera, lied, mélodie and sacred music. As well as providing a general overview, studies in this subject will concentrate on recent trends in the research and performance of the music from this timeframe and examine how approaches to this earlier music and culture are conditioned by more recent social and cultural values.

Music in the Age of Empires and Nations

This subject was previously known as Medieval and Early Modern Music.This subject introduces you to European musical traditions and developments of the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, c. 1000-c.1750. A range of musical genres and styles will be explored through active listening and score analysis, while European culture and society will be studied through scholarly literary sources. There are particular focuses on the development of musical theory, notation, composition, performance practice, the printing press and musical instruments. You will gain knowledge of early music notations through active engagement with primary sources. Studies in this unit concentrate on recent trends in the research and performance of medieval and early modern music.
