The Diploma of Counselling is an introductory program that provides graduates with the skillset to understand human behaviour.Students explore a range of topics including mental health, the impact of chronic health conditions on quality of life, foundational mental health intervention skills, and applied counselling skills. Studies will focus on adopting healthy thoughts and behaviours as part of a self-care approach, introducing you to a range of skills to manage stress and enhance well-being of yourself and others through lifestyle, mindfulness, and positive psychology.Students undertake the Diploma of Counselling for a variety of reasons, as a complimentary skillset to support their existing career, people managers looking to support their staff, and to build understanding in mental health to support self and others.If you are interested in further study, you can progress with credit into the Bachelor of Psychological Science to continue your journey in the study of psychology and counselling.Alternatively, if you are interested in becoming a qualified counsellor you will need to complete the Graduate Diploma of Counselling where you’ll be eligible to register with the Australian Counselling Association.

This subject examines the foundations of mental health and wellbeing for individuals, families and communities. Your learning will be underpinned by models of consumer engagement, social inclusion and human rights. Using a bio-psycho-social and systems-thinking approach, you will critically examine the personal experiences of mental health and wellbeing challenges and the options for support. Emphasis is placed on service development, contextual safety and relational approaches for supporting and promoting mental health and wellbeing.

This subject will appeal to any students wishing to explore the impact of trauma in our lives, and especially how this affects our learning. The subject will introduce and highlight key concepts of early adversity, that you may be familiar with from your own prior learning or educational experiences. These concepts will be explored through a lens of resilience and wellbeing. You will be introduced to theories, principles and strategies that will further your understanding of the impact of trauma, and enable you to build resilience, promote wellbeing, and support growth and learning, both for yourself, and others more effectively. You will also explore the importance of self-care to ensure your own sense of wellbeing which is critical for learning and the support of others.

​A Trauma-Informed Approach​ to Resilience and Wellbeing

In this online subject, you will learn about a range of approaches to managing stress and enhancing well-being which can be applied by individuals in a self-care context. As a foundation, you will learn about stress and coping, well-being and happiness, and motivation and behaviour change. This content includes different theories and models used in psychology to explain these concepts.Then you will explore the theory, scholarly evidence base, and practice of a range of self-care approaches, grouped into three themes:<ol><li>Lifestyle (healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, relaxation, social connections, and nature engagement)</li><li>Mindfulness (everyday/informal mindfulness, formal mindfulness and meditation, compassion and self-compassion) and</li><li>Positive Psychology (gratitude, acts of kindness, character strengths, meaning in life, flow and creativity). </li></ol>You will learn how to think critically regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the self-care approaches covered.Throughout the subject, there is a focus on understanding the mechanisms of action of these approaches (how they “work”). These mechanisms could be psychological (e.g., relating to mental activities like attention and emotion regulation) and/or biological (e.g., relating to physiological activity in the nervous system and/or endocrine system). In each weekly online module, content is presented in text and video formats, along with interactive online learning activities and additional scholarly readings. In practical activities and assessments, you will discuss, apply, and reflect on the techniques discussed in the subject content.

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance, despite their desire to do so. This subject will teach you the skills to help someone you&#39;re concerned about – whether it be a friend, family member, patient, client, employee or colleague - and also identify and respond to your own mental health needs in a trauma-informed, evidence-based manner.

Foundational Mental Health Awareness and Response Skills

This subject introduces students to major theoretical and empirical perspectives on the psychology of health and wellbeing. It examines the psychosocial determinants of health and wellness as well as psychological theories of health protection and illness prevention. Issues relating to the psychological aspects of illness causation and interpretation, prevention, maintenance of primary prevention, and chronic diseases will be covered. Further, the subject will cover major sources of stress and models of stress and coping. Mechanisms, theories and principles of behaviour change will be explored, as well as communication skills needed to work with groups and individuals engaging in behaviour change. As such, experience in team-building will feature in this subject as students will serve as a resource for each other&#39;s learning experience.

This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

Perspectives of the Arts on Health and Wellbeing

Human behaviour is not universal. Why do individuals behave the way they do? Lecture content will introduce and explore theoretical descriptions of individual differences such as personality and intelligence that can impact behaviour in a variety of contexts, as well as some of the factors which can influence psychological well-being, such as stress and coping. This subject also introduces the study of psychological pathology (psychopathology), including a critical consideration of psychological disorders and evidence-based interventions. Tutorials will build on lecture content, support reflective practice, and will facilitate the development of basic communication skills including counselling and professional communication.

Ever wonder why that tune gets stuck in your head, or when you listen to your favourite song your foot starts tapping, or why it&#39;s easier to remember the words of a song when you sing the tune? How do you choose the best music for a restaurant or in a dentist&#39;s surgery? Find out the answers to these questions and more in Music, Mind and Body. This subject explores the influence and impact of music and music-making on the human mind and body. You will develop an understanding of the way in which the brain perceives and processes music and learn about the development of musical taste, the effects of music on mood, creativity and improvisation, and the benefits of music listening and participation at all life stages. You will also learn about issues pertinent to health and wellbeing of amateur and professional musicians, including injury prevention. You will gain an understanding of research methods used to study music psychology, and critical thinking skills in evaluating research design. Music, Mind and Body will be valuable for all students interested in the use of music to enhance wellbeing. It will be of direct relevance for performing musicians, with strategies to broaden applications of music for a portfolio career or to help sustain a performing career. The subject will also be of interest to students from creative arts, humanities and social and health sciences pathways who are interested in incorporating music in their area of work, e.g. in rehabilitation, or in aged care, or in applied psychological and health science research.
